Cardinal de la Civ,
My own opinion is that, if Spain is to make such agreements with Egypt, she should have her way, and that heathen country should listen to our terms. If they want a toe-hold on Bob, and we know that they do, they will listen.
Spain, a Catholic country, should not cede land to her enemies or her allies unless it is to be returned at a later date. The idea of sending our Christian brothers to their destruction at the hands of the Musselmen of Arabia is abhorrent to the Church.
However, if Spain is to make such allowances to Egypt, it must be on her terms. I would like to hear what they want of us, instead of just suggestions.
This alone is concrete: There must be no agreements unless the persecution of Christians ceases and the Emperor of Egypt is baptized and Christianity be made to flourish in his country. Otherwise, the Spanish should make no deal.
Pope Calixtus I
