Let's talk Mirrodin. Wizards of the Coast's hype machine promises us a new card type in the fall expansion. Speculation?

Put an end to popups!

Nah, new TYPE. Something more drastic than that.

Interrupts aren't coming back. That isn't likely.

Something faster than Sorceries, but slower than Instants is possible, but doubtful. Who wants the added complication of spells that can be cast as instants on your turn only, or something like that?

Maybe a variant on Enchant Worlds is a possibility, but what? The Legends rule has pretty well replaced that. Maybe they mean Legendary Enchantments, which haven't existed yet. But that'd be underwhelming.

Best candidate: Artifact spells. They've openly said that artifacts go through good times and bad times, and recently, it's been thin times for artifacts. Colorless spells might be part of that bringing that back. You all noticed the Urza lands in 8th edition, right?

Colorless spells are a popular choice in rumor mills at the moment.

Yeah, but that isn't exactly a new spell type.

Power Leak

They say clearly that it's a new card type, a counterpart of Artifact, Creature, Enchantment, Land, Instant, and Sorcery. I absolutely can't imagine what it could be.

Will disenchant spells be able to kill them as well as vanilla enchantments?

A new type of permanent that you can play on someone else's turn?

A class of spell faster than a sorcery but slower than an instant?

Yup. Enchant Enchantment and Enchant World are both valid targets for Disenchant effects.

Somehow I doubt it'll be a new type of permenant that can be played on someone else's turn. There's no reason why you can't just put "can be played as an instant" on creatures, enchantments, & artifacts. In fact, I forget the name, but there's a creature in the Urza set somewhere that allows all enchantments to be played as instants.

Different topic. Mind's Desire is apparently the most broken card in Scourge. It was apparently restricted in Extended - BEFORE Scourge was released!

Word on the streets is that Mind's Desire will be banned in Extended, since there is apparently a combo involving it which allows people who are so inclined to eliminate their opponent's library on the third turn or thereabouts.

Wasn't this exactly what they were trying to avoid by making the Onslaught saga creature - heavy and jacking up casting costs across the board?

Which card would that be? I have a few copies of Mind's Desire around here somewhere.

PS If you really want to eliminate your opponents library, Raven Guild Master and Crafty Pathmage are the way to go in my opinion.

Not quite. It was restricted in Type I just as the set came out, because it's unbelievably broken there and can go off on Turn 1 or 2 (Lots of 0 casting cost things like Moxes, Hurkyl's Recall all your artifact mana back, play 'em again, Desire for 8, turn over Cunning Wish, Wish for Brain Freeze (for free), game). Now, other decks can go off on Turn 1 or 2, but MD is basically uncounterable, so it's trickier.

Extended it is still legal, but the combo is slower in Extended and there's other nasty competition. I'm hardly an expert, but I'd guess that it takes until Turn 4 most of the time (maybe Turn 3 on a good day), and by that time, your opponent may have ripped your hand apart with Duress, have counters ready for your set-up spells, have dealt 15 damage to you with Goblin Lackey + Goblin Goon + Goblin Piledriver, etc.

Anyway, MD is perfectly non-broken in Type II. It's one of those spells that gets better the more cheap set-up spells exist around it.

Mind's Desire

Casting costs are on average kinda high in the Onslaught saga, so it's not as bad as it looks.
