Until this weekend, I had no concept of true geekiness. Inflate your Upload Space

And that would be because I went ot ComicCon today, yesterday, and Friday evening. My first comic book convention, besides Texas A&M's "AggieCon".

I had fun. I was somewhat heartened to see I am nothing compared to some REAL geeks out there. Just today I saw a Dude in a WC3 Footman Armor getup. And it was a nnnnniiiiiiiicccceeee getup.

Got my Alex Ross Captain Marvel # 1 signed by...Alex Ross. Brian Michael Bendis also signed my USM #1.

Pickedup the 3.5 Players handbook and DM's guide.

All in all, I had fun.

Oh yeah, they also had a Trekships vs. SW ships roundtable on Friday. The Dummy who was up there explaining how the Federation would defeat the Galactic Empire (1) Began by saying the only thing that's canon was the movies and novelizations. and (2) The EU has no place in any such debate. Someone who was a lot more articulate than I called out to him in a strangely similiar scene to the "Bullshit!" scene from Chasing Amy. Even after having it pointed out that Lucas sanctioned the EU has "Official" the nitwit shrugged it off.

Oh yeah, and for Christ's shake comic geeks, bathe.

Ah, but to do that they have to lose contact for a few minutes with their comics.

Maybe if comics were waterproof?

Expanded universe, all the SW books that Lucasfilm considers :semi canon" because they, for themost part, don't contradict each other. UNlike ST novels where there's no coordination at all.

The last time I checked they were starting to do some coordination with the DS9 books.

2) Outer non-geek is having a grand mal with jealousy. Alex Ross is like some kind of god, but the kind that Buddhist people can worship without making Buddah uncomfortable.

I almost got drafted into helping run a geek convention…

Just after grad school burned me out in '89, working at a Dominos (yeah, I'll catch hell for admitting that, more than for burning out in grad school) a fellow worker was running a minicon at the Virginia Tech Student Union. Can't remember if it was fantasy or scifi.

He had one very interesting story. The head honcho bought a private beeper setup at police auction. They are never seen these days except at resturants; a short range coded transmitter and a dozen dedicated beepers.

Being a good geek he had to open one up to see what's what, and inside was a wad of clay-like stuff. He took it back to the police department (I think it was Roanoke or Salem, VA) and they recognized the substance as plastic explosives!

The beeper set had been seized from drug dealers. Apparently one beeper was to be used to kill a suspected snitch, who snitched before the plot was carried out (hence the seizure and sale). Signal to beeper, boom, no more snitch.

The drug dealer and his cohorts got another charge added…

Imagine if he hadn't, or happened to open one of the ones that wasn't rigged! He probably would've been killed testing them one by one.

Suffering from ads?

I've been to two Geeky conventions in my life and both were when I was a teenager (so it was a while ago ). The first one was when I was 15 and I went with my friends to a D&D convention (Geekiness of 8/10) and then when I was 18 I went to the San Diego ComicCon just like Lonestar (Geekiness 9.5/10).

Thankfully I got help for this problem in the form of a girlfriend who taught me girls don't like guys who go to alot of geeky conventions. There has been no relapses since.

Phil Moy (artist for the Powerpuff Girls comic series, among others)

Autographs:

E.G. Daily (voice actor, Buttercup on the Powerpuff Girls)
Adam Reed (creator, Sealab 2021)
Brett Butler (VA, Dr. Quinn on Sealab)
Maurice LaMarche (VA, various voices on Harvey Birdman, the Brain on Pinky & the Brain)

John DiMaggio (VA, Bender on Futurama)

All in all, I had an excellent time at all 4 days of the Con.

Back when I played D&D 10 years ago I used to always dream about going to GenCon. GenCon is the mother of all Cons and was the first fantasy/sci-fi con. I believe it's still help in Wisconson where the creaters of D&D lived in the 1970s.

I never realized ComicCon had gotten so big. Is it like one of the biggest comic conventions now? Ten years ago it was big but still not a huge deal. Now it sounds like lots of artists and writers go there.
