There was a book I read years ago about a jewish guys life. He spent his youth in the warsaw ghetto. The story has always stuck with me. It was called For those I loved . It was autobiographical but I can't remember his name (Martin....???)

Have you read them all?

I read excerpts from "Mein Kampf", it is not only racist ****, it is also simplistic as hell. It offends people with a certain degree of intelligence

Same goes to some extent for Mao´s texts (without the racism - at least in those texts I read).

I don't see why anyone would recommend "Mein Kampf." It is relatively poorly written, offers little to no insight into Hitler beyond what we already know and certainly doesn't offer any valuable philosophy.

Ficciones/Labyrinths by Borges

(one in Spanish, one in English, to be fair to his dual heritage)

The Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer.

The first because although Borges wrote mainly short stories, the wealth of ideas and images encapsulated in each of them makes them seem more like novels, especially ones such as Funes the Memorious, and the Aleph. He takes us down recondite and arcane pathways and byways in Twentieth Century culture and thought.

The second because it comes from a time when English was being formed into what would become Modern English, and Chaucer's experience at court, in life, and in diplomatic service to the Crown in Europe breathes life into a wonderful array of characters- rarely has 'Literature' made me laugh so hard, so loud and so long as the 'Miller's Tale' and the 'Wife of Bath's Tale'.
