Over due library books. Put an end to popups!

So how long is the longest you've ever had an over due library book for? I once had a book for 12 years. I was in elementry school and my parents bought a new house on the other side of town half way through the year so we packed up everything and I forgot all about the library book I had checked out. Later, when I was tranfering from junior college to a four year school I was going through some old boxes and found a library book that was *ahem* a bit over due.

It was called the Shy Stegosaurus of Crooked creek and it was about a boy on summer vacation who meets an intelligent dinosaur who's hiding out in the American west. It was really rather dumb but as a 3rd grader I liked it well enough.

Can anyone top that?

Nope, the library had long ago written the book off and they were just happy to finally get it back. So I guess it just goes to prove that if you commit a little crime they fine you but if you commit a big crime but later come clean about it then they're just glade you were honest.

What did you do to deserve a $300 fine and more importantly why did you pay it? You should have just waited them out like I did.

No, I have never had a book overdue for too long a time.

Working in a Library, I once scanned back in 4 books, each which had an overdue fine of $300 on them, so this person owed at least $1200 to the library: I never saw them, but if they planned to graduate, that must have been some surprise. their fault thought.

Having overdue library books should be a felony.

Jesus, I was in 3rd grade so I don't think I could be tried as an adult.

On a more recent note though when I was in college I used to not buy the text books to several of my classes (who wants to pay $80 for a book and then have the school say they'll only buy it back for $4?) so I'd check the book out from the RBR (the reserve book room) which was basically the secion of the University's library where you could check out books for 3 hours at a time. The problem was the night before the test there would be a big line for the book so I'd check it out the day before and spend all night studying with it then return it, pay the fine, and get a good grade on the test. As an added bonus the other people usually didn't do well on the test so the curve became that much larger. Harsh, but sometimes a college guy needs to look out for #1.

hey oerdin:

i know that book! yes, it was stupid, but i liked it too, at the time.

longest i've kept one out was a paperback from the dekalb co. library system. they've stopped counting them, so if you don't return them they don't really charge you anything (i think. i don't recall them sending me any letter or message saying the book was overdue).
so i've a copy of watership down and zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance which i've now kept for roughly two and a half years.

^^;

Every school library I've ever used seems to lose the one book I take out on odd occasions. I'm pretty sure I always took the book back, but I would spend a week hunting desperately around my house, a month feeling vaguely guilty, then forget about it until the end of term when the slip of paper came through again asking where the book was. It's a conspiracy.

I don't often get overdue fees, since I usually just ring up the library on the day the book is due back and get it renewed. I did find they get a bit pissed off if you do this 5 times (with three week intervals between each call). It was about 4 months I had those books...
