Theres been alot of talk about Civ 3 and all the so called improvements it will make over civ2. But Civ 2 is a really bad game. It is a great game concept ineptly done.
I am a traditional strategy board gamer from the old Avalon Hill days. 1 thing all AH games had in common were a concept called "playablity"
Simply put, each side would have an equal chance to accomplish there victory conditions. Chess is a great game because both black and white are equal. But lets say that the chess designer gave white 3 queens. Then undoubtly white would win every game and the game would suck.
In civ2 , alot of games are decided by the computer via huts or starting positions. These and the following problems exist with civ2 and hopefully are corrected and I list some of the improvements I think are needed.
1) starting position-easy to fix. 100 "starting boxes" should be preprogrammed into the game. A starting box is 8 squares in all directions from orginal settler position. All civs should have an equal number of huts, special resources and rivers for a fair start.
2) Huts-again, real easy to fix. huts should yeild the following commodities..50 gold,100 gold, horse, chariot, archer, tech, settler or city. Thats 8 commodities. the computer should assign a random # 1 through 8 to each commodity for each civ. Open hut #1 and get commodity #1 and so on. Then when 8 huts are opened, the process is repeated for the next 8 huts. This would allow you to get the same commodities as all other civs assuming you find as many huts as they do. Again, FAIR.
3) Cheating- most cheating in civ2 is maping the board during the game or during a break. Passwords are worthless in civ 2. The fix would be to have passwords entered before the civ is picked. This password is absoloute. The game can not be loaded without the password in any form. And with the huts being regulated, cheating would be all but eliminated.
4) No tech at start of the game for any civ. An option for the number of settlers each civ will start with . An option for the # of huts 0,1 x reg. civ, 2x civ and 3 x civ. an option for the tech peridign to speed up tech or decrease tech. Resource seeding should be more contorlled, 3-5 billion is to abstract, it should be a # 1-5 the higher the number, the more special resource squares, simple.
5) Tech choices- The stupid programming wont let you chose the tech that you want to research sometimes. The fix is to allow a civ to research any tech that they have the prerequisites for.
6) Improved AI -dont know how to fix it, but man they are dumb.
7) New worker placement-When a city adds a new worker, it goes in stupid places. Sometimes it is placed on a forest when there is a forest on a river it could be placed on. Sometimes on a grassland when there is a gold
mine nearby. Also, when you build a settler, the workers should not be replaced. 1 should be selected and removed from the square that produces the least total resources.
Any other changes without the above, will make civ3 fall in the catagory of alpha centuri,T of T, and call to power which all suck.
Thats just my rambling, now back to the nonsense.

Oh yes, I almost forgot about wonders. There is just not enough great wonders in this game. I think that some should be added and others made more powerfull....such as the following..
Add a wonder called Lewis and Clarks Expedition. This would allow that civs ground units 1 extra movement, cost 400, be available at seafearing and dose not expire costing 400.
Observatory should be improved to be a library in every city.
College should be a university in every city and universitys should be 100% increase in beaker production.
King richards crusade should be an extra shield in all squares of a civ and cost 600 to build.
Adam Smiths should pay main. cost of all city improvements.
Add a wonder (lacking a name for it right now) that gives an extra trade per spot producing trade throughout the civ. Available at trade and costing 600 with no expiration date.

If I get the combination of wonders in our tribe game that I want, you soon will come to learn that wonders are the only thing.

i have a theory on why this is done!
ive noticed that if u goto far on the tech tree u are limited on certain techs till u aquire the lower ones in other areas!
also it seems to be more strict the harder the level!
i think this was intentional and done to prevent going straight for high tech first!
while annoying and confussing, i think its needed to keep your techs balanced!

In the present form, this attempt at dictation of how to play by some geek ball programer is a hiddious failure. If you get warior code from a hut, you are now put back 4-10 turns from getting monarchy because you will not get monarchy option. This, by itself, could ruin a game.
I AM THE CURE, AND ITS TRUE,ITS TRUE!!!!

I'm a little worried about some things, to be honest. At least from the gameleague perspective.
Apparently Civ III is going to have Civ-specific units. Now I haven't been around for too long, but I've seen people fight over garbage like who gets to be the white civ.
I shudder at the thought of one civ having a unit that most multiplayers would like to have. Games would never get off the ground. Certain civs would have to be DQed from use in league play.
I can see it now:
Player 1: Well, I won the league game.
Player 2: Well, you should have won. You had the Germans and thier field artillery. You deserve fewer points.
Player 2 then launches crusade to alter points based on civ used/quits playing league.
Er, not that anybody here thinks like that

well thats just what makes those huts so much fun!
if u think opening a hut will mess up ur tech development dont open it!
i know what u mean about it but thats where this flexibility thing everyone talks about comes in!
again its annoying and can be confussing, just another part of the game to be mastered(how the tech tree really works)
i know it sucks not having monarchy by 3500bc, the best i ever got it was at 3000bc(w/o host bonus) but u know thats the risk in opening huts!
just my 2 cents, AND ITS TRUE,ITS TRUE!!!!

i agree with mr. virus on this one...
huts are such freebies that a little possible disadvantage from them is a good thing. and that, my friends, is true.
