:hmm: Pratchett is a grown-up humourist with some surprisingly deep themes, a good grasp of philosophy, socilogy and politics and bloody funny to boot.

Rowling writes books abouut wizards for kiddies.

Uh, China Mieville and Neil Gaiman are both better than Terry Pratchett and Joanne Kathleen Rowling, though I enjoy all of them.

If I have to choose from among the latter two, I am going to have to go with Rowling because I've read enough Pratchett to begin getting ticked off at some of his habits. I am sure Rowling will begin ticking me off at some point too once she has more books out.

Recommended author - loves poking fun at the "high fantasy" types who write epic, biblical stuff. Is to fantasy what Douglas Adams is to SciFi.

The graphic novels are a great introduction to his stuff - personally I prefer his later books to the first few - but it's all chuckle inducing.

If it's got "Discworld" on it - give it a try.

Except Pratchett has written 20+ very good books, rather than 2 masterpieces and load of rambling codswallop, but I suppose that's another argument.

Yeah... but nothing Pratchett has done comes CLOSE to those 2 masterpieces. '42' itself destroys everything else.

Anyway, I've read some Pratchett, chuckled a bit, but didn't see what the big deal was about. Really liked the 1st two books, though 'Small Gods' was same-old, same-old, and 'Equal Rites' was nothing special in the slightest.

The general standard has definitely gotten better since then. Equal Rites is my least favourite one by quite a distance. If you have the chance to borrow one of the later books off a friend or from the library or something I recommend giving them another try.

And yeah, the first two books of The Guide are pure comedy gold. Simply brilliant. It's a shame things went downhill so fast after that.
I haven't read any of Adams' non-Guide books, though, which I've heard varying reviews of in the past. I should try and pick one up some day.

Poor choice of books to start on there Imran.

The Witches books (Lords and Ladies, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Carpe Jugulum) and the Guards books (Guards Guards, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, The Fifth Element, The City Watch) are the better ones IMO.
Followed by Pyramids, Interesting Times, Thief of Time, and Soul Music.
