So, What do you think of Confucianism?

I, for quite some time has been interested in the teachings of confucious, and his system of "how-things-should-be".

I was highly intrigued, and LOVED lots of the things I saw. I didn't like some things, too, like it's conservativism in family affairs, for example, but for a person living in a 6th century BC, I hardly think it's surprising.

I also love the fact that it explains why humans must behave kindly to each other, without resorting to scare tactics, and creating boogiemen, like *ahem* some other moral teachings do.

Discuss with me, and educate me.

I don't know enough about it to have an opinion.

I briefly read about Confucianism in a religion class I took about a year ago, but didn't pay enough attention to learn anything worth remembering.

It is the behavior between humans that has changed drastically, IMO.

His system was very based on a family oriented society, and this seems to have ran right up the ladder to Emperor himself. Nice, and all, if you an isolationist society with limit transportation capabilities, and have to live with and be around your familly all the time.

Today, people interact with more people, they garnish ideas set aside by others, and lift them as their own. People realize, now, that what is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander. Yet, in this system, it requires you to obey to a strict familiar hieracrchy that just wouldn't work in todays information age, or the age of freedoms...

I don't think we should use his familiar hierarchy; if you look at the Jen, for example, you see the description of courtesy between all humans, global peace, even human rights, and democratic government, things that are still very relevant today.

confuscianism is stupid. Its great to prevent masses from thninking and deviating from social norm tho.

But I'd rather have people not think than think stupid, so go confucianism! we could use more confuscianism in the states.

having been raised with a lot of it embedded and internalized, i a) find it hard not to be offended at all those stupid confucius jokes at asians' expense, and b) find it hard not to be irritated by people who think it's stupid.

it's a flawed system, but it set up a situation where certain ideals, such as education, were highly prized, while everybody was viewed as having a set position. this dampened social mobility and is probably one of the reasons why east asia did not industrialize earlier; however, it's a good part the reason why asians are degree-happy.
then there's the issue of bowing to authority. while it makes for a complex top-down system that can govern effectively, it has the added effect of stifling innovation and being resistant to change: that helps to explain japan's inability to reform, for one.

it's really a mixed bag, no different from the other mixed bags of english liberalism and what not.

Japan has made some pretty radical reforms, from city states to modern european styled states, to the economic powerhouse it is today...

Do you mean China?

I disagree with Confucious' view on marriage, but I like his idea of Jen.

Confucianism has its pros and its cons, like any political or social system. As it is, it works well for East Asian societies, but it wouldn't really go over to well in the West. Confucianism has a emphasis on stability over liberty that seems stupid or wrong to most Westerners, so I don't see it catching on anytime soon.

It's quite a wonderful belief system for keeping women in their place and people subservient to their government.
