Okay, my understanding is that currently we have a limit of 2 megs on the sounds space we can use for E3000 entires. I propose the following way that we can expand this....
There should be a "base" pack of sounds that take up the 2 MB limit, these will be the unit sounds, improvement sounds, etc.
Then there can be another "extra" zip that will have the long events sounds, intro musics, etc, etc, which will have no limit on MB space.
So you can play the scenario with just the "base" sounds, but you have the option of downloading the "Extra" sounds to get the full enjoyment of the scenario.
I say this becasue recently sound files have been huge, and better because of it. Anstieg was, what? 11 MB? Prince of Darkness is at least 3 MB...even the files I'm mixing for enemy of god are nearing 2 MB already and I ahven't even started on the events sounds.
Wadda ya think?

I don't think this should be a problem, but please email me privately about this...

Dan, are you involved in earth 3000? I meant this as a rules question for scenarios not like an apolyton database question.
The reason I asked this in the forums instead of via email is becuase I know others want more space too, and this ruling could affect everybody.
I think 5 MB limit is reasonable. Didn't you play Anstieg? that had 11.

well lets see, the last I heard there were a dozen entries in the contest, assuming everyone will use thier max half a meg for the scenario thats six megs, and....I think that 5 MB is a better limit for sounds than 2 MB....so lets say everyone uses the full 5 MB thats 60, add those up thats 66 megs, not 100. And thats assuming everyone uses the full 5.5 MB, which I doubt they will.
So can you guys commune and find something out?

Mr. Temba,
66 Megs at 2.8k/sec is about six and a half hours. Maybe most people won't use 5.5MB. Maybe we'll get another ten entrants...
I'm sure my ISP won't wear 66 Megs. For that matter, I'm already concerned with the existing arrangement which could be 20 Megs.
I have brought the matter to the attention of the 'committee' as requested, and am happy to hear options.

well if thats the only thing you are worried about...I dunno I agree that sound should be unlimited but for a real quality scenario you need to include and change as much as possible, agreed? So I am proposing a 5 MB limit on sounds. Is THAT acceptable? I really feel as though I might have to end up cutting stuff out of my scenario, and thats the last thing I would ever want to do.

I've yet to hear from the others, but Xoom offers 100 Megs of space for their pages. If we developed a site at Xoom and shared the password etc. around to the entrants, they could upload directly to the site instead of e-mailing me.
If the 'committee' does agree to change the rules, is that an acceptable option? It would be even better if there was space on Apolyton or HAC...(Dan? Markos? Reismark?)

1) we dont have a space problem
2) what exactly do you need the space for?(didnt follow the topic thoroughly)

we need the space to post scenarios, you remember what a scenario is right?
Cam is right, Xoom gives a heck of a lot of webspace and I have a xoom site, so....wait
I'm a contest entering type person I would be biased. Wasn't the old sleague site on XOOOM? Couldn't you guys use that site?

the problem is not space, the problem is giving access to everyone to upload a file on our server

OK... I don't want to see any dummy spitting now...
It's been agreed by the "brains trust" that for the Scenario League 'official' award (to be judged in this instance by Blackclove), the rules stay as they are. Therefore, entrants must be a little selective about their preferred sounds for inclusion.
I can't provide an answer regarding the "People's Choice" entry conditions, but to date they have been one-in-the-same.
Of course, if you want to post a 15 Meg scenario on your home page (beyond the contest per se), then great I guess! You'll just have to trim it for judging.
Despite this ruling, as for the "web uploading issue", how about we take out a Xoom site, and use it as a 'transit lounge'. Everyone uploads their files with a communal password. Someone 'official' changes the password once the files are up, and hands it over to Markos and/or Dan. They then take the files from the Xoom site? This could still be done for the scenarios beyond the rules' specified maximum size so Apolyton / HAC can host the "director's cut" versions as well as the official ones for judging.
(n.b. - even though I'm the one to break the news, it really was a group decision, so don't blame me!). I trust that this will not curb peoples' enthusiasm for this great contest, and I trust everyone has some good ideas percolating away (?).

If I can't make a quality scenario then I might as well not bother entering it. I will just finish my scenario as is and post it on my page then, I guess...I dunno I'm kind of dissapointed with this. Lets consider that there are (by my count) 79 sounds in the civ2 sound directory. Now a good scenario should modify a lot of these sounds, let say 50 is a good number. With 2 megs for sounds space that gives each sound a maximum size of 40 KB, if you modify all of them, you have to make each sound approximately 25 KB, zipped. Thats not a lot at all. I think it should be upped to 5, I really do. I'm not happy with this ruling at all.

who cares? I want to include the mother****ing sounds. Whether some people won't download them doesn't matter because we know there are many who do. People have said that sounds will definitely affect thier scores.
Do you guys not download scenarios over a meg either? Are you compoooters to swow??? awww....

350 MHz PII, 160 RAM.
Look, it's great that people are willing to go the extra yard, but for judging, the panel have 'implied' that they would like your best sound files.
Anyway - we shall await for Reismark's announcement on his "solution".

here is my thought -=-=-=-
I am down to 3.3 megs and I absolutely can't cut my sounds anymore, its bad enough as it is. Therefore I will not enter the normal contest and just enter the peoples choice contest.
