	I want my own forum! Increase the size of your Attachments

How do I go about doing that?

No Im not trying to take away from the populous on 'Poly, I want to make a forum so everyone that lives up here (on the north slope of Alaska) can have a common place on the internet where they can meet and have discussions etc. Only problem is that I dont have any coding experience whatsoever and I know zilch about the technical side of forums. Help me out dangit!

Most creators of forums are useless...they tend to have more forums than posts most of the time. When starting a forum, you want just one forum, not the forty or fifty that only as busy a place as Apolyton can need.

Remember the Off-Topic forum on Poly started off in the Civ2 Discussion forum...

If you're serious about it, first thing you'll need is a web host with some sort of database support (MySQL, for instance) and PHP support.

Next, you'll need to pick forum software. I've been using phpBB, http://www.phpbb.com/ , which was really easy to install comapred to the last database-based forum I tried to use.

Well, those are the major steps.

Very good advice. Now when are you going to update the challenge games. Umm...and only wimps don't like the Pyramids at Deity. I love to churn out the babies.

Since no one has mentioned it yet - a fairly fast Internet connection would be important to stop people waiting around.

Nothing worse than a terminally slow forum.

I guess you could start on an ADSL or cable connection, but I for one wouldn't dream of hosting on a dial up phone connection.

Also see how about funding it - maybe the most important consideration of all.

just buy webhosting and an address. it's the easiest way. it may cost more, but it definately saves you the time and hassle of setting up apache + php, and configuring it to work for you. plus, the webhost's connection will probably be a lot faster than anything you have at home, and you can blame them for downtime

so, find a good webhost with PHP installed (and look for other things you want too, do some research before you pay up) and download PHPBB from www.PHPBB.com. That forum system is fairly good, with a large community of people making mods for it, and it's FREE.

there are a lot of mods/hacks/skins for it too, and you can always make your own, or find someone here at poly that would help you. we have a lot of photoshop gurus, a gaggle of coders, and a mass of potential mods
