New forum needed? Put an end to popups!

Just wanted to get some opinion on whether now that the source code is on the way whether we should request a new forum. I mean, the source code doesn't really fit into "creation/AI/Mods/Scenarios" now does it?

How about : CtP2-Source Code Project

Here's a poll.

Should the above forum be created for CTP2 at Apolyton to cater for the source code project?

Indeed - it will be well worth it. I suspect that there will be many people who don't trust new source and wish to play only the original. We don't want to scare them off.

Got spare money?

At this point I think a new forum would be a bit premature. It's not as if thread in the Creation forum were fighting for a place on the first page before this news came out. However, when the actual release of the source code comes closer, I think it would certainly be a sound idea.

Either way, the exact role of Apolyton in all this is a topic of discussion for the admin & staff. Eventually Markos and Dan will have to make the calls on that one. What the outcome of that discussion will be, you'll notice soon enough

Edit: testing

I am in agreement with Locutus... but seeing how we already require several threads, for programmers, bug lists, etc., I believe that the separate forum can't be premature. Let's leave this one to mods.

Actual we see that a lot of people don't trust the code of the old ctp2.exe. So new source code will attract more people. But we need a new forumanyway, of course once the code is released. As it is not about modding or scenario creation. It is only about modifing the AI. SO actual this forum needs also a new name. Skip the AI and Mods and Scenarios is also covered by creation, so CTP2-Creation is enough. So one for non programmers and programmers who are mod and scenario makers. And the other one for the source code project, once the time is come. We see it early enough when we need such a forum, when the number of threads for the CTP2-project increases.

A thought: eventually we're going to need a website.
It's all very well doing most of the stuff from the forums, but we need pages of info and documentation and downloads and whatnot. So while we're at it, we may as well ask Markos and Dan if we can get it hosted on Apolyton, then it gets its own forum anway, provided traffic is high enough.

That's a good point: do we need a website? Of course, we will create documents and downloads and stuff, but do we need a new website for those?

One option would be to post material we create on the regular CtP2 website (or on a subsection of it) on Apolyton. The disadvantage of this would be that only Markos, Dan and I could upload stuff. When needed, others can use the forums or their upload folders to (temporarily) post their stuff.

Another option is indeed creating a hosted site (or a completely independent website) and give everyone involved (or at least the key players) access to this site, so they could all maintain the website and upload their stuff.

A third option could be to use some part of Apolyton (either the regular CtP2 website or a hosted site) for this project, but to appoint one or two people to serve as webmasters. This would people who have no other (major) role in the project (i.e. non-programmers), who have the knowhow required to maintain a website and who are around often enough to update the website in a timely fashion whenever it's needed. Once again, if others have stuff to contribute, they can post it on the forums (or elsewhere) first, after which the webmaster(s) would give it a more permanent place on the site. This is a bit like how Clash of Civilizations works (except that the 'life-expectancy' of their average webmaster is not very high ).

Seeing how we have some people interested in the project that aren't programmers, we would have the webmasters... but I trust that, at least as we begin, we can do with a separate forum. Uploading some stuff there as attachements... as we get bigger, though, yes, it's a good idea to have a website, and I believe that Markos and Dan would agree to host it .

Edit: But let's see, it might be that we are fine with only the forums... let's not get a website unless we are confident we need it.

My concern is that forums, and especially forums dealing with something as holistic as a game coding cannot be read as threads. A much better way to read forums like that is by reading threads chronologically, which is fairly easy at the time, but fairly difficult retrospectively when you can't sort threads by starting date, only by last-post date. It can make it difficult to follow discussions and information flow that happened across more than one thread.

If we do, I think a subsection would be best, with separate news pages and stuff. Chances are most people won't actually care about the development stuff, and it'll just clog the players news. This in itself I think places a fairly large responsibilty on you Locutus, since you'll need to be able to follow almost everything that's going on with now both the regular forums and the dev project for the news. Also it means that we could end up with resources and other files scattered all over the place again, and leaving the Apolyton Forum Search as our best way of finding it

I think the best solution would be possible to merge these two options. Set up an independant or hosted site, and give access to the people who need it, as well as having a dedicated webmaster or two. They can post updates and files, and the webmaster can catch anything else that gets posted to the forums, keep the site tidy, organised and searchable, cross-reference the important stuff, and probably run a regular news, update synopsis so that everything is covered, and kept available and easy to find.

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Until we get the code, I'm in favor of keeping this in the Creation Forum. Other than Peter's Mod and the sprite lists, there isn't too much going on here in the way of creation. So this will keep this forum active (something that has not been the case until a week ago..).

Once the code is in our hands, then we could think about expansion. I do not see too many major modwork projects coming out until then...

FYI: DanQ has said that he would create a separate forum at our request. And Hex, we should do it when we get the source... I believe the plethora of threads about source would make it impossible for anyone to discuss or find information about mods... you know the activity of this forum previously, so players seking mod info (likely quite many after all the hype!) won't even be able to find the right threads easily.
