All Gay H.S. in NYC what are your thoughts? Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,93060,00.html

I looked at this from the angle of "Oh, so they arent ostracized?".

THEN I realized.............. well how damn hard is it to hide your sexuality? You really arent supposed to be "getting it on" in highschool during the school day anyway, so what is the need?

It seems... counterproductive, doesn't it?

The best way to end discrimination is to be accepted by the rest of the populace by interacting with them.

Rampant sexuality everywhere you look.

And no, I don't support different schools. It's a step backwards.

I do like the idea of the queer prom, like they do in Ontario, where anyone is welcome...but by far the biggest group there are gay teens who feel they'd be hassled if they took their SO to their school proms. I know a few people who went and said it was a blast.

Straight people are welcome too.

Good point.

What if someone is constantly getting harassed at a certain school because they are gay, a nerd, what-have-you?

I know people who have gone to private schools because they couldn't go to public schools without fear for their lives or emotional well-being... I think the state should comp. the cost for private schools for such people. Maybe making a school were such people, not just gays, can feel more comfortable would be in-line.

However, Fresno Unified has specialty schools for "gifted" students, allowing in those ussually labled as "geeks"... That school district is all messed up too... Because by strengthing the strong, they also weaken the week. Sometimes all a jock, or someone commonly labled as stupid, needs is a little encouragement from a geek to start doing well in school.

Also, high school is suppose to teach first, but what about real world education? Ostracized people will be ostracized in the real world as well, separating them in school will not educated them of this...

Hmmm, difficult to say... IMO

Tired of ads?

Hmm, I wonder what the requirement is to proove a student is gay to get admission? Or is it strictly limited to LGBT kids? I mean, it doesn't say admission of non-gays is prohibited.

Were it private, I'd have no problem. Being public, I'm pretty skeptical. On the one hand, my utilitarian side says that anything that will protect these kids from abuse and harrassment is good, and it won't make a negative impact on kids in other school. On the other hand, I don't know if it will be good for these kids' social futures to be isolated, and I can see it breeding resentment. I don't like the idea of segregating a minority for any reason, although it is supposedly for that minority's benefit.

This reminds me of the subway car segregation in Tokyo. Women were constantly being molested in the crammed subways, so they have designated "women only" cars to stop the pervs. It's segregation of a public service, but is it wrong? This isn't an adequate comparison, I know, but is similar.

Ultimately, I guess I'd just have to wait and see the results.

Sure...if you're in a 1980s Molly Ringwald movie! In the real world, 99% of people who don't care about learning and like to abuse "geeks" aren't going to be encouraged to do well based on anything the "geek" does.

This idea is one of the most backwards I've heard about coming from a modern country. It's a disgrace the gay community is represented by this kind of segregationists I still can't fathom this guy is actually enthusiastic about separating gays from the mainstream society.

There was a time where gays were forced not to interact with the rest of society, and were sent into camps. Fortunately, this time is well gone, and now some gays want to do it again themselves

Actually I'm gonna have to agree with Bod's.

Presumably this is a private school, so they can exclude heterosexuals. However, if a private school specifically excluded homosexuals, there would be an uproar in the gay community.

So, fair is fair. If gays can start gay only schools, then some fundamentalist Christian group can start a no gay school. Neither is particularly fair, but as long as they are private (as I think all schools should be), neither are an affair for the government, either.

My point is there is no reason the schools should be pandering towards the sexual desires/preferances of the students....... it simply shouldnt be a consideration.

I agree, it shouldn't be a consideration with the kids either. But it's a big deal to many kids in high school which somehow feel threatened by it.

I can understand why some gay kids want to go to a school where they won't be harassed about it, but I don't think segregation is a good thing. The vast majority of gay kids just come out after high school, to save themselves the trouble of dealing with all of the twerps in high school. It can be psychologically damaging, though.

Nope, it's public, the article said so.

I will add to my previous statement that first and foremost I would like to see school districts just cracking down on homophobic behavior and anti-gay abuse. That's where the real efforts are needed.
