Contest Ballot Results! Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

After exhausting all possible sources of information, including Encyclopedia Britannica, Poor Richard's Almanac, and of course, the Zodiac (not forgetting of course, the ballots we sent out) the SDC staff has arrived at a decision for the two topics that will comprise the Third Scenario Design Contest!

Fantastic Worlds Platform: Dracula
Test of Time Platform: The Argonauts

Not to my complete surprise, these were the two most popular topics. We selected Dracula over the Argonauts for the Fantastic Worlds contest for a couple of important reasons:

1. Dracula was the most popular theme among the balloters (just barely ahead of the Argonauts). We feel that this is an accurate reflection of the community's desires, and so by making Dracula FW instead of ToT, we will be giving more Civers an opportunity to pursue Dracula as a topic (since there is a proportional amount more of people who own FW versus owning ToT).

2. A number of prominent Civers in the community had expressed their desire of pursuing a historical topic, while others wanted to pursue another fantasy topic. Dracula just happens to kill two birds with one stone. We will allow entries that depict both the fantasy world of vampires threaded in literature and media, but we will also allow entries based on the actual life and times of the count whom this myth is supposedly based upon.

3. We saw more substantial opportunities for the newer aspects of ToT (such as linked maps and the like) to be utilized with the Argonauts theme. For example, one doing an Argonauts ToT scenario could create four maps: one each of heaven, earth, the seas, and the underworld. (If you have read classical Greek and Roman mythology, you know what I'm talking about).

That's a few reasons, but who the hell cares?

We are targeting Christmas Day as the opening day for codename distribution. At that time, the official rules for the contest will be posted, and all other issues will be dealt with before that time.

Welcome to the Third Scenario Design Contest! This has been a public service message brought to you by HAC and the Scenario League.

ToT is better than FW. I don't even know what the Argonauts are. I wanted Dracula to be in ToT because there are more event space, better events, more units, more unit abilities, and the option of including several maps. I wanted to use maps to have transylvania, dracula's castle, and the depths of hell itself.

Please change Dracula to ToT. If more people wanted Dracula it should be with ToT because that gives us the option of making it a better scenario. Frankly it sucks that you made Dracula for FW because some people are too ****ing lazy go out and buy ToT.

I won't be participating under these conditions. My initial suggestion was for a DRACULA scenario in TOT, not a Vlad the Impaler historical scenario in FW. I may still do the TOT Dracula scenario anyway, perhaps in partnership with others.

I am of course not going to participate in the contest but I certainly believe that MJ and Techumseh's posts make a lot of sense. I know quite well who the Argonauts were and imho they would adjust prefectly well to FW. Conversely, Dracula seems to be a much better ToT topic than the Argonauts.

Anyway, the best topic was Mr. Temba's Hey MrT, you should do the Easter Island thing off-contest!

Hey! benedetti!
With all due respect to you and Mr. Temba but the idea of making a scenario about the Easter island was my idea.
Just to clearify...

No offense taken by the way. Afterall it is still a great idea...
And just as a side note: I am still thinking about making a scenario about the Easter Island but I think I might need some help.
But Dracula probally will come first if I decide to participate.

I would also like to see both themes changed.

The Argonauts would require too much research to do a good job with. Plus there is not a whole lot of ancient art to use for the 67 improvement bitmaps that are required. In contrast the Dracula theme has allot of material that can be drawn upon. Like Techumseh said, if it is a Dracula scenario - as opposed to a historical Vlad the Impaler scenario - then our creativity is the limit to what we can do with the addition maps and graphics ToT provides.

As far as the FW scenario goes I was really hoping for Easter Island. The whole idea of a flourishing civilization mysteriously destroying itself is a fascinating platform from which to launch a contest!

What? Hendrik you lousy imposter! Get out of my sight! j/k. Yeah, it was his idea, I was just one of the millions that supported it. It will be worked into my next scenario (which I'm making for fw).

Neither of these topics really interests me at all, but none of them really did anyway. I won't be making either one.

Excuse accepted. There was no offense taken btw.

Nice to see you would like to help benedetti, if I ever get to making it.
Mr. Temba, you will make one? It will then probally be in good hands. If you want help or so just ask. I figure I wouldn't get finished with it anyway...but good things take time.

I still think that Dracula isn't that bad a choice at all. It does leave room for both fantasy and history and it's good it will be in FW because I don't seem to understand ToT yet. Eventhough I have it for about a month now.

In other words, it'll be the choice of the entrant whether to do a vampiric Dracula scenario or a historical Vlad the Impaler scenario. Your choice.

Unfortunately for you Easter Island folk, on the off-side chance that we would replace one of the topics (that one would probably be Argonauts), the next-in-line would be the Raj, not Easter Island. It's a longshot to see that topic in. Personally, I don't see either topic getting replaced, but probably getting switched. In that event, Techumseh would help you, Hendrik, figure out ToT so you could submit an entry.

I am still waiting to hear from Blackclove...

I hate to muddy the waters further, but can't SDC#3 be just Dracula for both ToT and FW? If it was the most preferred choice, and if it can be done as either a 14th Century historical or a 19th Century fictional in either platform - I would have thought that it would give enough scope for everyone to be happy. I'm with William on The Argonauts - as a theme generally and as a TOT scenario theme specifically.

Is the one entrant per person rule going to apply - or can you do one ToT and one FW? If so, does one need to take the historical theme and the other the fictional - or can both be fictional or historic (exclusively)? (I know, I know, wait 'til Christmas)

Cam's idea isn't bad, but if I make a Dracula scenario it will be only for ToT, which does make the voting unfair. I'm planning on incoorporating the historical and fantasy myth of Dracula into my scenario, and I see no way of accomplishing this with FW. Reismark, please let me know as soon as possible if I can do Dracula in ToT. I want to begin drawing units as soon as possible.

On a side note, am I going to be competing against Techumseh and Cam?

Here is a Solomonic decision: why do not you allow contestants to pick their own topic from among the six proposed ones (both platforms)? That would probably generate a lot more response than previous contests, which were... uh... all but multitudinous

Mike,

I think it's my intention to do a FW entry, and depending on the rules I may also do a ToT entry. No promises on either case, but that's where I'm at for now.

As for 'competing', I think by the looks of the Second Reich and Shannara, your skills are far more advanced than mine - you'll be right mate!

Put an end to popups!

Gentlemen:

I have spoken with Blackclove, and here is what we have come up with:

Fantastic Worlds Contest: The Argonauts
Test of Time Contest: Dracula

Yes, Cam, wait until Christmas. My preliminary answer would be that you would be able to enter on both platforms. The tradeoff to this is that there will be different topics for each platform. This way, people will have a choice of themes, which is more digestable than no choice. The ToT Dracula entry can be either historical or fantastical.

Benedetti, that would just simply produce pure chaos. That's why Blackclove and I decided it would be best to do separate themes so the entrant has SOME choice. Yes, I did receive your e-mail - some info on assisting in HAC 2000 should be on the way this week, so watch the site.

I hope this is satisfactory to all.

I'm just wanting to restate my earlier question as to why both ToT and FW can't be Dracula? It is my impression from Reismark's post;
quote:
We saw more substantial opportunities for the newer aspects of ToT (such as linked maps and the like) to be utilized with the Argonauts theme. For example, one doing an Argonauts ToT scenario could create four maps: one each of heaven, earth, the seas, and the underworld. (If you have read classical Greek and Roman mythology, you know what I'm talking about).
.... that the reason The Argonauts was selected was because it was envisaged to suit ToT well. Now that's not happening, why are we stuck with an arguably inappropriate (for Fantastic Worlds) second-choice theme?

Apologies to benedetti, but I'm not sure why the 'maze-like' theme of The Argonauts will translate well to FW, and I would be interested in getting some advice on this.

Cam, a lot of people liked the Argonauts idea, and it was pretty much a toss-up between it and Dracula. It looks as though we will leave the parameters pretty open as far as what Argonauts is about, with the caveat that it should be a bronze age fantasy or bronze age quasi-historical scenario. We'll also provide lots of thoughts on the "real" Argonauts and possibly some icons for you to use. I think the key thing will be for it to be a "quest-like" scenario of some kind. However, Reismark and I are in deliberation about the actual rules right now, so we are open to suggestions.

The scenario seems quite appropriate for either FW or ToT, in my opinion, and leaves room for a lot of interpretation. Plus, if you want to do Dracula, you can always get ToT

I think we should NOT provide a map for this contest for either Dracula or Argonauts, though for the latter we may provide an optional Aegean map.

Good! I was unsure whether anybody would catch the joke.

Cam:

The author of Pyramid Pursuit asks me about a maze-like scenario? I would picture in my mind two different ways to "attack" the Argonauts scenario, and both of them adjust well to the FW platform. (1) a quest-type scenario where the goal is to steal the golden fleece after you have overcome 1001 difficulties. (2) a more traditional scenario focusing mainly on sea expeditions to capture "punched cards".

Blackclove,

Thanks for the explanation. I must say that I'm still a little surprised that The Argonauts was apparently so popular (apologies now to Reismark, who seed to like the theme a lot), although this may stem to a large extent from my own lack of familiarity with this area. I'm pleased that the organisers will be providing the extra pointers and support.

As for ToT - 'yep' - got it. I'm still mindful that there is a lot of new things to learn with ToT, and hope that in the coming months that 'people' will add to William Keenan's inaugural ToT SL Design Tip.

benedetti,

Shhhh - don't mention 'P.P' here - it suffers from 'first scenario syndrome'! On the design approach, initially I could only see a quest-like design taking place (and there have been several excellent examples of this structure produced recently anyway, and at best I would just be copying these in essence), however the 'punched-card' approach has got me thinking! OK, I'm starting to warm to it just a bit...

Just wondering....

Blackclove's going away for Christmas - is the site still going to be launched on Christmas as planned?

Will there be some advice on how The Argonauts theme can be done any other way than as a quest? Will there be a guide on how closely this theme needs to be followed, or can a participant create 'any old Bronze Age fantasy game' with occasional references to Jason and The Argonauts?

Cam:

The site will be up on Christmas as long as Blackclove gives me final approval of the rules beforehand. (Mark and Techumseh have already given the thumbs up).

Quests need not necessarily be involved in the Argonauts theme (Blackclove's description was a little tight). We are basically looking for a scenario set in ancient times with a lot of revolving around gods (something similar to what I did in my History of Mythology scenario years ago). We just chose the name The Argonauts because it sounded cool and represented that particular time period.
