Logically, what is the 'Florida Panhandle' (Time out:0 days after 01-08-2003, 09:52)
It's the main isthmus of Florida
It's the Western part of Florida
It's the Bananahandle

Panhandle Poll Inflate your Upload Space

A couple of US states have a so-called panhandle, a comparatively small and narrow piece of land stretching away from the main part of that state.

Now, in the case of e.g. Oklahoma, it's pretty obvious what is the panhandle and what isn't... But with Florida it isn't, at least not to me. Sometimes when an article speaks of the Florida Panhandle, I get the feeling it's refering to the large isthmus going North/South, and other times it seems to refer to the Western part of the state which is also in a different time zone than the rest.

So which one is it? Heck, let's have a poll.

Suffering from ads?

It's the northern part of the state that extends to the West.

Good to see you posting... it's been a while

I guess the rest of Florida could be called the US Panhandle then.

You have to admit, it's a bit confusing.

No, I'm not posting much these days, I guess I'm getting a bit old and apathetic.

Western Florida would be even less confusing.

Agreed, but so is Panhandle compared to Gator Kingdom. Entertainment value is a weak argument for naming geographic locations.

Panhandles don't have to be small or narrow. The Nebraska Panhandle is rather large and about as wide as it is long.

But if you look at it... it's a very appropriate description.

After having consulted my atlas, the Nebraska panhandle is still comparatively small and narrow. Ha!

I think this obsession with kitchen utensils is basically unhealthy.

Not enough, it seems. Compare the panhandle to the rest of the state and then tell me which is smaller and narrower.

Can you really call a panhandle that makes up about a fifth of a state's land area "small and narrow?"

Yes, comparatively small and narrow, otherwise it wouldn't be a handle.

It'd be a bit odd having a panhandle that wasn't smaller and narrower.

Oh, I see where our disagreement lies. "Small and narrow" is not the same thing as "smaller and narrower." My bad.
