I chose Maya for CtW this time and I think they are great. It is impossible to overrun them early - this is a huge advantage in battles where the enemy has reinforcements.
In addition, america can be defended very easily, and you can conquer america in 5 turns (taking out incas in turn 2 and aztecs in turn 3).

Umm...just what do you do UNTIL the modern age? By then you need to have conquered about 2/3 to 3/4 of the world, or you'll run out of time.
As for me, I'm looking for advice about CtW Tactics Tactics (meaning tactics in CtW "Tactics" battles). I'm getting my butt kicked in these battles on Tougher. I try to set up an offensive defensive position to let *them* come to me into the teeth of my siege, with my mounted units poised for flank or rear work. This works OK on Moderate (it's ugly, but it works), but at Tougher my infantry melts away under the rain of missiles, and I can't heal, build, or even entrench any units. [I suppose this would be easier with French supply wagons!]
Any suggestions? Any replays to watch?

Get your General to Decoy. You should be casting multiple Decoys in a single Tactics battle.

some people like to conquer the world within the time frame (I think 3 turn after info age) but I like to extend beyond that and enjoy chipping away bit by bit...before modern age...just play coward, conquer free territory and do diplomacy

rul3: To each their own; I enjoy the pre-modern units as well. After all, in this CtW campaign, I'm the Mongols, and it would be most un-Mongol to wait until horses are obsolete!
My thanks for the Tactics Tactics ideas; I have some saved positions that I could go back and try. I guess it's clear now that I'm not using decoys effectively enough...or counters, either (always tricky when under combined-arms attack).

I played the Russians in the Ctw, and I manhandle the comp on difficult levels since the Russians have alot of bonus with calvary I overhelm the other nations with multiple calvary, and inf. armies with generals. I love it, it is almost unstoppable. Just needs alittle turning and it will be unstoppable. The Britts are awesome in the gunpower ages, I dominated fast with the musket guys!

Again, Maya are a very good choice in CTW. You have to build alot and the maps are small, so the 50% faster build and the 33% timber save do help alot.
next time I try chinese. The possibility to overrun australia (best ressource on the map) and get a free wonder card early (Inka and Maya have this option, too) should help alot, together with the instant build of citizens.

I agree with Hermann...each nation needs some adjusting to our style of play.....for germans I use defensive first and then offensive....Now playing Maya..kind of weird though for me...striking early in the game
