CTW tactics Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

Hi all...just conquered the world on tougher playing germans...great advantage on the later ages

here's my tactics......early on try to acquire a province with supply to increase your army and also aim for resources that are strategic for your nation; e.g diamonds for german to increase the commerce limit.

up to modern age, you have the advantage well over other civs....in term of tanks and air power..( I usually don't build any naval force...just enough to guard the land assault force....for a greater advantage build a wonder 'space program' - a must wonder. Then to top up the advantage of germans i build kremlin....need a lot of tribute to buy cards before the wonder card appears.. .... then conquer nations with the most tribute so that you can make the most out of it.

Plenty of tactics...through diplomacy or treachery, just conquer ze world hohohohohoho

I chose Maya for CtW this time and I think they are great. It is impossible to overrun them early - this is a huge advantage in battles where the enemy has reinforcements.
In addition, america can be defended very easily, and you can conquer america in 5 turns (taking out incas in turn 2 and aztecs in turn 3).

one thing when you fight a nation with ally......the trick is to let the ally build the first city....then when they try to build the second city, I just set one of my light armour to attack the civilians and they'll never expand. Just make sure your armor is not seen by their main army or tower, I don't know why but they just dont attack or chase you if they didn't see you....how to avoid them - just get space program wonder. That's why I said I made my move only after the modern age

Umm...just what do you do UNTIL the modern age? By then you need to have conquered about 2/3 to 3/4 of the world, or you'll run out of time.

As for me, I'm looking for advice about CtW Tactics Tactics (meaning tactics in CtW "Tactics" battles). I'm getting my butt kicked in these battles on Tougher. I try to set up an offensive defensive position to let *them* come to me into the teeth of my siege, with my mounted units poised for flank or rear work. This works OK on Moderate (it's ugly, but it works), but at Tougher my infantry melts away under the rain of missiles, and I can't heal, build, or even entrench any units. [I suppose this would be easier with French supply wagons!]

Any suggestions? Any replays to watch?

Get your General to Decoy. You should be casting multiple Decoys in a single Tactics battle.

Keep those heavy inf. units back and wait for cav. to come. Use archers to take out the enemy pikemen and horsies to get the archers

exactly

form 1 large group with all foot archers as main force, 1 group of cavalry to intercept enemy archers and 2 groups of heavy infantry to intercept enemy cavalry.

Position the heavy infantry to the flanks and advise them to stand on ground to make sure they don't run into the fire of archers (don't forget to change them to aggressive if they are needed)

Position the cavalry in front. If Heavy inf is approaching run away with the cavalry and let the archers do the work.

keep the ranged kav. as reserve and use them if it really looks bad.

some people like to conquer the world within the time frame (I think 3 turn after info age) but I like to extend beyond that and enjoy chipping away bit by bit...before modern age...just play coward, conquer free territory and do diplomacy

rul3: To each their own; I enjoy the pre-modern units as well. After all, in this CtW campaign, I'm the Mongols, and it would be most un-Mongol to wait until horses are obsolete!

My thanks for the Tactics Tactics ideas; I have some saved positions that I could go back and try. I guess it's clear now that I'm not using decoys effectively enough...or counters, either (always tricky when under combined-arms attack).

I played the Russians in the Ctw, and I manhandle the comp on difficult levels since the Russians have alot of bonus with calvary I overhelm the other nations with multiple calvary, and inf. armies with generals. I love it, it is almost unstoppable. Just needs alittle turning and it will be unstoppable. The Britts are awesome in the gunpower ages, I dominated fast with the musket guys!

Again, Maya are a very good choice in CTW. You have to build alot and the maps are small, so the 50% faster build and the 33% timber save do help alot.

next time I try chinese. The possibility to overrun australia (best ressource on the map) and get a free wonder card early (Inka and Maya have this option, too) should help alot, together with the instant build of citizens.

I suspect that *all* of the nations work fine in CtW, it's just a matter of adjusting playing style to fit the strengths and weaknesses of the nation. Now what you enjoy playing is another matter, and how you usually play is another. With the Mongols I'm "playing against type" to some extent. By habits dating back to Civ2 I tend to be a defensive boomer, not a raider or rusher. I'm doing fine...though I suppose to a large extent I'm doing defensive booms with the Mongols. Darn these leopard spots, anyway!

I agree with Hermann...each nation needs some adjusting to our style of play.....for germans I use defensive first and then offensive....Now playing Maya..kind of weird though for me...striking early in the game

Another easy way to break a hard province (without sabotage cards):
Build up and defend your territory in the MA. Go for missile shield first, and then world govt. Just nuke your way through the cities and capture them with ~20 infantry an ~15 ant-tank.
