Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Get a checking account and deposit the little buggers.

0% (or better, if interest-bearing) beats 3% any day of the week.

Paying to have your check cashed is a scam. Go get a bank account or at the very least locate a grocery store in you area in which they will cash checks for free at customer service.

I agree... most banks have free checking that at least give you the benefit of cashing checks for free. But thanks to low interest rates (**** YOU GREENSPAN) savings rates are in the toilet. And while the stock market flutters and people keep money in bonds, once the market recovers, bond returns will fall as people put their money back into the market.

Hang on, Sava -- if saving rates are in the toilet, and consumer spending is in the toilet, where exactly is the money going?

No, having done it once upon a time.

Someplace will charge .8% to 1.6%, so you are getting tiwce the ripoff.

Credit Unions or Banks are the best. Get a savings account even, and they will cash checks.

Wspecially after your thread about being mugged, keep your money in a safe place....like a bank.

ACK!

Accumulation of debt... more frugal spending... this economy is a bit unique. Money, at the consumer level, isn't being spent as much... therefore, business makes less, then cut costs, which includes jobs, which, in turn, affects government revenue and consumer spending. People can't spend money if they aren't making it. In such an economy, Bush's strategy has been to increase government spending and give tax cuts to corporations and rich individuals, hoping they will invest in business. But this is not a supply side problem. The government should use that tax cut money for public works programs that put people to work. The solution to this economic problem is job creation. But instead of giving fat tax credits to business in hopes that they'd give people jobs, the government should be putting that money to work in other areas. That might include government spending, such as public works programs, the space program, health care, education, telecommunications, etc.

Imagine, for instance, if the entire Bush tax-cuts were given solely to the federal education system in the form of teacher salaries. Let's cap salaries around 50k for new teachers, and maybe 100k for tenured teachers for the time being. With this influx of money, it creates demand for teachers, and considering the state of the public education system, we need better education. It's a win win situation. Our children get a better education, and teachers get better salaries. With more income, teachers can spend more on houses, cars, consumer goods, etc... which would spur the economy.

Money flows through the economy in a cycle like water.

Typical lefty rants.

An economy in crisis needs spending!! - Low Interest rates for borrowing will help spur this, High savings rate's would help hinder it.

AS - Start Banking, You can save money, and Earn Money from it too..... and if nothing else you can increase your credit rating for when you need a mortgage.

completely unreleated but i always found it real ironic how banking and the stock market work... there's the slightest dip (sometimes just a random slight change) or bad rumour then people start selling stocks or withdrawing their money which causes more of a dip which causes more people to withdraw which causes more and more...

there was a bank in chinatown in philly that rumour was it was running out of money (which it turned out, it was not)... this caused a massive run on the bank that ruined the bank.

its real obvious but it still gets you over how crazy the system can be... if people got confidence and lived their life as normal, buying things and all that the economy would only thrive.

uhmmm lefty rants? Bush is breaking US government spending records... what cave are you living in? Your solution is borrow and spend, yet you are criticizing my strategy? I want to spend money that we HAVE, without borrowing. And I want to spend it smart. But, if I were in control of the entire US budget, you can bet I'd trim a lot of the pork. So in the end, I my 2003 or 2004 budget might be a lot smaller than Bush's. Typical lefty rants, eh?

Sorry for going off-topic Speer. I'll stop threadjacking.

Suffering from ads?

Usually ppl use check cashing programs to cash checks that they don't have the funds to get the money until a certain date. In essence hocking a check that they have written, and post date, to get some immediate cash.

I am not certain if this what Al wants to do, as he recently had a very bad incident, but if it is not... Al get an checking account, if you need help in doing so let me know...

That would be quite the amazing feat, given that there is no such thing as a federal education system in the US...

I would actually go for that* if your side would allow vast structural changes to be made to the educational system, including a "Union Busting" effort (comparable to TR vs. Standard Oil) in which Dubya could bust up the NEA into regional or state entities. Because giving teachers a bunch of money without the means of improving their profession means you're throwing money away at the current crop of "bad teachers."

See, it's not the lack of salary opportunities that makes for bad education, it's a bad educational system and that is what we have. People don't mind the money... they mind the job.

*Or block grants to the states since, as Wraith noted, there is no "Federal education system."
