I had forgotten about Fight Club. It was good enough to at least be nominated for Best Picture.

Gladiator did win Best Picture. Not all on that list did.

Still, I voted for The Empire Strikes Back.

Bah! No hitchcock movies (pycho, North by northwest), not Kubrick films (2001, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Paths of Glory), no great Westerns like Good, Bad, Ugly, man, these kids today have no appreciation for film, if the Matrix is seen as some pinnacle, even of fun moviemaking (what about Jaws or Indiana Jones when it comes to fun?)

Yes... no Hitchcock or Kubrick...
Kind of confirms the "beauty contest" nature of this competition

But knowing the average age of people on this site... no surprise

So true, Ming. The truly tragic thing is that "Dumb and Dumber" got more votes than any Kubrick*, Hitchcock, Ford, or even Spielberg movie.

*I can't stand his films, but admit to their high quality... especially compared to D&D.

Worthless... not at all. It shows which movies posters here found the most enjoyable to watch. Nothing wrong with that. I guess it comes down to the definition of "best movie"... what makes a movie the "Best"...

Citizan Kane is a great movie. It had many things that had never been tried before. It is a land mark classic.

But is it as exciting as the Matrix... no way. While I find Citizan Kane enjoyable to watch, and am totally impressed with what was done back at that time... and the political satire of the story... and even the surprise ending of the story... I will admit that the Matrix is probably more entertaining... But which is the better film... I would say CK for many different reasons...

I could come up with reasons to support every movie on this list (well, maybe not for Braveheart)... but I don't agree that this list represents the best of the best.

But that's just a matter of opinion

You are absolutely right.... It needs something... something with skeletons and zombies and a guy with a chainsaw attached to his hand...

It needs a little Army of Darkness. (The name by itself blows the competition away: Evil Dead 3-Army of Darkness)

the thought of Army of Darkness in the same poll as Citizen Kane or the Godfather is funny... but if you're going to put Matrix and Braveheart in there, you might as well add it too...

I agree with the people saying that the choices on this poll for best movie ever are mostly ridiculous.

well "Most Enjoyable To Watch" does not necessarily equal "Best Ever Movie".... and no matter what Gladiator can't compare to Citizen Kane, Shawshank or Chinatown

I'm not saying my opinion is better than someone else's..... wait, actually thats exactly what I'm saying

I'd go with the first LOTR, which I think was better than many on the list.

First movie where I sat down in the theatre and was shocked, genuinely and pleasantly surprised, by how well it turned out. Great Flick.

I am still puzzled by the Gladiator.

Why people like it? I simply don't get it, it's a unique film in that sense, I can somehow understand all of the other options on that list. It was hyped like crazy, everyone gave it 5 stars and when I saw it, It was the definition of mediocre. Nothing special, nothing very bad either. Only thing It had going on it was that it's movie about Gladiators since.... whenever (long time probably). Anyone care to comment? Maybe tell me what makes it so good? I have only seen it the one time at the cinema...

When someone invents a good idea and puts it on the big screen he also steals something away from the future moviemakers. Only one can be the first. Which movie is better, the one that had the original idea or the one that copies it and instead of ****ing it up actually makes a better version? Should I like the first more because I respect it more? And who did they rip the idea of in the first place anyway, some book? Also the trick is that the movie I see first will probably be my choice for the better one because it takes away something from the movie I see after it, unless the second one is much better.
So I think I'll have to agree, the more you enjoy the better it is.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I enjoyed Gladiator. It was well done, good acting, the script was solid, great action scenes, excellent direction... It's one of my favorite (Not BEST) films. Anytime I see it when surfing the movie channels, I'm a sucker, and will stop and usually watch it until the end.

But after saying all that... one of the 10 best films of all time...

I feel the same about the Matrix... fun to watch, nice special effects... but one of the top ten films of all time...

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

This poll is sooo silly. No John Ford. No Preston Sturges. No Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Robert Wise, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Renoir, Lang, Ophuls, Sirk, in fact nothing that wouldn't have impinged on the consciousness of some whacked out Valley Girl (except perhaps Citizen Kane....).

No Indian films. No Chinese films. No German or Italian or French cinema represented.

And Braveheart!!!!! I've done more cinematic dumps!!!!

Star Wars!!!! Why not nominate 'the Jetsons', for Gawd's sake? Hmm, yes, the great acting range of Mark Hamill, from A to ...... A, and back again.

I understand. Films for grown ups like 'Culloden', 'The World of Apu' and 'L'Armee des Ombres' are just not as gee whizz bang as 'Braveheart' and 'the Matrix'.
