Advise GP on a new VCR or DVD player Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Well my 15 year old VCR has started eating tapes. Looks real nice on the outside and otherwise functions fine. Figure it is time to buy a new one. What should I get? Oh...unless you know how to make it stop eating tapes.

When looking for a DVD-player, don't be afraid to look at cheap, unknown brands.
These are usually good machines, and most of them are region-free as well

I want to drive to a store and buy something. I am not an audiophile. But I'm also somebody who's time is worth money. Just tell me what to buy that will last a while.

While we're at it, I need hardwood floor/landlord advice. My kitty just knocked a very heavy metal paperweight (like a 6 inch metal "jack") onto the floor where it made a nice puncture of the floorboard.

Unless you plan on spending $300 or more, I would suggest getting something that is the same brand as your TV. That way, you don't have to worry about remotes. Most mainstream brands are the same around the $100-$250 range. Such compatability generally gives you better performance. It sounds like you take good care of your ****.

Suffering from ads?

DVD: I fancy JVC personally; they're not too expensive either (no more than $ 150).

Floor: maybe you can try filling the puncture with liquid wood.

Yeah, there are some very decent $100-150 models made by Sony, Panasonic, etc.

I have long since lost all remotes. The dying VCR is a JVC as is the live TV (of similar age).

JVC's won some home cinema prizes in Eurocomland the last couple of years, and their players can play DVD Video, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, and MP3 formats.

Do they make combined VCR/DVDs? Aren't most videos (like at that store with the flirty salesgirls) still on video?

3rd question. How long should I cook a Hebrew National Frank and at what temperature? In a toaster oven?

I'd buy one of each... but of the same brand. It sounds like you are going the JVC route. I don't trust the quality of those combo'ed machines.

That depends on how much you think you'll use the VCR. If you like recording things, you'd want a VCR.

They don't need to be that expensive, JVC has a model for about $230:

http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL027007

And I have no idea how to cook that Hebrew National Frank, sorry.

I have an old Panasonic VCR Recorder/Camera that is actually doing a great job as a VCR, unlike my regular VCR, so the DVD is all I want.

I'd also be a bit sceptical about combined machines. If something breaks in one then most of the time both are out of service.
