Lets think worst case scenerios again.
Trading has been observed between the Pirates and University. Continued University delays suggest further trading is being planned.
Test...

I'm kindof glad that we have set teams in the PBEM. I wouldn't be able to trust you guys very far.
But seriously would we really be able to do that?

Voltaire is right in saying we should strike first, keep momentum on our side. To ensure this is indeed always the case continued and frequent naval patrols will ensure that we detect and intercept any invasion force well before it lands on our shores. Even if we cannot destroy it, detection will give us more than enough time to prepare defences. But yes, the best defence is always attack. We should try our best to avoid having conflict rage on our soil, rather let the plunder take place in the home of our enemy.

We still need to broach our suspicions first. Also we don't have enough evidence.

Re: the 8 square thing... yea, that is a problem. But as I said, if we are sufficiently vigilant with our patrols we will notice something before they strike. And lastly as Voltaire pointed out, I don't plan to ever be on the defensive.
Also, Googlie is right with the Maritime Command Centre, one of us needs it (prefferably us). That and the Command Nexus are important military SP's. The morale boost that the Command Nexus gives will make our armed forces much more capable.
Also, hopefully by the time marines start showing up we will have in place at least 2 garissons in every city. This combined with the Command Nexus, and our built in perimeter defence will make taking a city a very difficult affair for any attacker. If we adopt the construction of a High Readiness Brigade (as is briefly touched on in the White Paper of 2125), then even if the city is taken we will be able to recapture it and launch a counter-assualt against the enemy positions before they can gain sufficient momentum to begin a break through into our heartland.
Once again, I cannot stress the importance of maintaining a large and powerful navy at all times. Our ground forces can remain reliatively small, and be in need of mobilization if we are to go to war, but our navy should be at or near 100% at all times. Superiority of the seas will not only hamper the movements of our adversaries but will prevent them from interferring with our plans for future conquest (historical example would be the british (no brainer)... almost always outnumbered in total troop volume by the other major european powers, but yet they managed to frustrate all of their plans of expansion and then themselves took control of more than a third of the planet).

Another idea along the lines of what jamski was thinking is to just have a foil with hand weapons, but equip it with deep radar. Effectively what you have is a PT boat. Really cheap to produce, good for patroling and popping pods and the such. The idea of putting deep radar on our trawlers is an excellent anywho. That way we can detect an enemy approching to attack them and move them out of harms way (plus, as he pointed out, they can act as an early warning net, complimenting our regular force).
Also, it is a good idea to surround your island with your own bases. But with that comes the problem that they will be very easy to probe and require a lot of effort to defend as they are isolated from our ground forces.
