Civ III Editor Question ... Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Everyone:

Am I under the mistaken impression that the Mac-specific editor for Civ III is only compatible with v1.21? That if you upgrade to v1.29 (beta) the editor will not work?

Sheesh. Yet *another* reason *not* to get a new iMac. Cripes. I'm getting a PC if, by November, nothing new has been revealed regarding Civ III for the Macintosh. I ain't gonna drop $2700 for a fancy new top-of-the-line machine, printer/scanner, software and memory upgrades and only surf the g*d*mn Internet with it and/or type the occasional paper/novel.

Yeah, I'm picky, and maybe that means I never was a true Machead, so to speak.

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Correct, the editor works only w/ 1.21g; however, Brad Oliver is, on his own free time, building the 1.29f editor. In the meantime, you can reinstall a second civ3 application and upgrade it to 1.21g w/ corresponding editor. This way, you could at least make maps to use w/ 1.29f.

Good for Brad, really. I only wish that Macsoft would be more forthcoming with what its plans are for Civ III. I love the Civ series and would enjoy being able to play it on the newest iMac.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Dual OS? You mean, get a new iMac and the Virtual PC 6.1?

Unless there are a lot of changes to Virtual PC, that would be such a heavy slow-down on the Mac to try and play Civ III that you might as well just get a PC.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Heh. Well, after doing some exploration, I found out that a real good PC isn't much cheaper than a top-of-the-line iMac.

All those $400 and $600 PCs you see advertised are really el cheapo cases with even cheaper components inside. By the time I finished customizing a proposal over at Dell, it was costing me roughly $2600 and wouldn't ship until the middle of September. Then I went to CyberPower Inc.'s Web site (www.cyberpowerinc.com) and found an incredibly good PC going for $1800 (top-of-the-line iMac runs roughly the same). That price, of course, was w/o MS Office (a necessary thing for me ... WordPerfect ain't gonna cut it) or a printer/scanner.

I was also told to avoid Pentium chips and go with AMD Athalon chips.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I'll agree on the Pentium/AMD front. Though if it costs that much similar, why not get the top-of-the-line iMac and then Office X Professional.

That way you should be able to successfully run Windows as well as OS X.

Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

I'm told that if you try to run a Windows program on OSX, even with the 6.1 "emulator" that ships with Mac version of MS Office X Professional, there would be incredible slowdown. So playing Civ III Conquests (assuming it isn't ported to the Mac) would likely be out of the question on such an emulator.
