What do you miss from the early net? Support Apolyton

Seeing the tech humor link posted elsewhere (a site I had posted a story on a long time ago) got me thinking...what sites do you miss from the early (or earlier) days of the net?

A few of mine off the top of my head:

FIBS: First Internet Backgammon Server...the one you had to telnet into in plain text mode, before anybody made any GUIs for it. It was fun, and the people were nuts. It also didn't have the oddness introduced by teens, kids, and fanatics of various flavors that plague almost every community site around now. But then again, I was an early teen when I went there, so who knows...

Netropolis: Used to be hosted on delphi.uk...fun net-based game where you got to basically run a corporation that didn't exactly follow the letter of the law. I killed a lot of hours on that.

And of course...Usenet. The real thing, before inundations of spam made it a pain and web forums drew a lot of people away. I miss it. A lot.

I didn't really get on until 96 or so. So I'm not sure what I missed out on.

I just didn't know enough about the web to find the cool stuff.

It took years for me to find the cool stuff.

And after I found the cool stuff, where do I end up going- Apolyton

I don't miss anything. The internet was almost empty of content in the past, and filled way too much with porn. I'm damn glad there is now somethin non-porn to be found on the web.

Ahhh yeah, the good ol' days

I didn't get online until '97, so I don't miss that much... the only thing I miss is the best chat-room I've ever seen... Anyone remember that old comic chat-room from MS? You're still able to download the chat-room-app (After a very long search), but you can't connect to anything anymore

Haven't been a regular user of chat-rooms since they cancelled it

I got on in.. 95? Yeah, back then there was no popups, or not much banners everywhere anyway. No javascripts, flash, or other things that really are not nice to see in every page you visit. Clean fun... also no stupid people, because back then you actually had to be interested about it to be able to get in, there were no internet connection in every home.

Lots of porn, I mean me and my friend were like 'wow... there has to be like... maybe 10 gigs of porn in internet!'.
Though that has naturally increased.

I started in '98. This means I don't know of too much to miss, but I miss the internet bubble. It was great, seeing the economy rise, the stock markets shoot up every day, and any half-brained idea could come true (at least until the bubble burst )

I do miss being able to go online without feeling the government is on my back. (Fleeing the law in 16 states doesn't help that though... )

With the hindsight, AltaVista wasn't all that hot then, either. I mean, you used it because there wasn't anything better, but it was slow-ish and (compared to Google, anyhow) not exactly good at finding stuff you wanted. When the Google came, it was like "Whoa! They don't clutter their frontpage with useless shit! And it actually gets you the results you can find!"

Tired of ads?

Exactly what years do you guys consider early Internet? I cannot remember when it became available to the general consumer population.

I had my own Internet access not until 1996.

I first had access to it when Jimmy Carter was Pres, but it wasn't called the "internet" back then, although the term had been coined.

I was a regular daily user at work well before TCP was mandated across the ARPANET.
