Gay marriage is hardly a matter of equal rights. Marriage was classically a male-female thing, the foundation of a biological family, and without religion it's more or less irrelevant anyway. The phrase "gay marriage" makes about as much sense as "license to wear shoes," or "rock-hunting permit." If all you want to do is sex, you don't need the government's permission. Heteros have been fornicating for years, and it doesn't seem to bother them. |
Some American Indian cultures had gay marriages. Christianity had gay marriages for many hundreds of years.
In our own society, mariage provides a whole host of other benefits, like lowered taxes, shared health care, power of attorney, social security, hospital visitation rights, protection from testimony in court, etc. Marriage is about more than sex, and so are gay relationships.

Cocktail frank?!? When I was a kid, it was something my parents used to feed my little sister. I don't know how she could eat them - they always looked like marinated pygmy peckers to me.
