If you oppose equal rights for someone you are supporting their oppression. Gay marriage is part of equal rights. So yes, opposing gay marriage makes you heterosexist (much better word then homophobe, since it's not really about fear).

Gay marriage is hardly a matter of equal rights. Marriage was classically a male-female thing, the foundation of a biological family, and without religion it's more or less irrelevant anyway. The phrase "gay marriage" makes about as much sense as "license to wear shoes," or "rock-hunting permit." If all you want to do is sex, you don't need the government's permission. Heteros have been fornicating for years, and it doesn't seem to bother them.

Some American Indian cultures had gay marriages. Christianity had gay marriages for many hundreds of years.

In our own society, mariage provides a whole host of other benefits, like lowered taxes, shared health care, power of attorney, social security, hospital visitation rights, protection from testimony in court, etc. Marriage is about more than sex, and so are gay relationships.

Marriage is a farce nowadays. Without religious overtones, a marriage is nothing but a mutually binding exclusive screwing rights agreement. For the modern hang-out-till-you're-sick-of-each-other-then-split crowd, it's an anachronistic inconvenience used to shackle the dumber members of society. You'd think people would have figured that out by now.
Heterosexual civil marriage has an (admittedly hazy) social function insofar as the fear of divorce can keep loveless couples faithful, so their kids grow up with two parents, which ensures a full if probably unhappy childhood. People seem to be starting to wake up and realize their lives are a joke though, judging by the rising divorce rate. So even that is probably on the way out.
Which is not to say I think that state of affairs is right; I hate the shallowness of endless schmoozing and refuse to live that way. But that's how most have apparently chosen to be, and in a life with no lasting loyalties civil marriage is a comforting sort of hindrance. If you're going to sleep around, you should at least be honest to yourself and others about it, and not penalize yourself with a divorce settlement when you do what you knew deep down you would inevitably do.

I perfectly know I'll sleep around, and damn I can tell you I'll do it before marriage. There's no way I ruin my marriage because of some bloody urge or curiosity => I'll satisfy the urge and the curiosity before being married.

Well then, what exactly does the marriage mean to you? Legal/tax privileges or the possibility of losing half your stuff if you cheat? By government edict, you are one flesh, until you decide otherwise, in which case you get another government edict to contradict the first one. Whatever.

To me, marriage mostly means settling down, and offering a stable environment to my wife, myself, and my kids. The marriage ceremony makes the step more clear... And the tax favors and other material things give a further guarantee that we won't want to go back to joyful instability.

The revelence of marriage is relative to the couple and their reasons for union. The divorce rate is irrelevent to the individual couple.

The pairs ability to share responsibility, give up certain things...
