Salt...now with 30% less sodium Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

I saw a can of salt that said "now with 30% less sodium". What the heck's that supposed to mean? Isn't salt sodium chloride?

It means they shrunk the size of the container and the serving size 30%, but they are still charging you the same price.

Someone at the factory has severe issues and tossed some bleach in the mix. No sodium there, just chlorine. Either that, or they wanted a clever way of saying the package is 30% smaller and making it sound like a good thing.

More seriously, our usual products rarely correspond to their exact chemical composition. When you buy a bottle of water, you don't get pure H2O, but a bunch of various mineral mixed in the water. I don't know for the US, but in France, this mineral composition is an advertising factor.

I'd suppose it the same for salt. You don't get pure NaCl, but I guess there are many elements in the contents which makes salt X slightly different from salt Y.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Well, it seems to me that if salt is half sodium and half chlorine, then 30% less sodium would mean that there's a good deal of unbonded chlorine just lying around in the package. And since unbonded chlorine is, IIRC, a highly poisonous gas, if I were you I'd stay away from that brand, or at least open it in a highly ventilated area with a gas mask on.

well the chlorine of salt is an ion, not a gas. but you can't just have unbonded ions floating around unless it is in water or dissolved in something similar.

Me thinks that they just have some other crap in the salt.

They have replaced the NaCl with something else, normally KCl as Mad Monk said.

NaCl with 30% less sodium =

Na+ + Cl- <---> NaCL

x(Na) + y(Cl) <---> 1(NaCl)

x = 1 - y
x - 0.3 = 1
y = 1.3
x = 0.7

0.7(Na) + (1.3Cl) <---> 0.7(NaCl) + 0.6(Cl) = Clorox bleach

I checked the label again, it says "30% less Sodium per Teaspoon". However, checking the ingredients list, the second largest ingredient was not KCl. It was SILICON DIOXIDE. That's right, SAND. KCl didn't even come in third, that position went to MgSO4.

So, the natural and "chemical-free" label actually means that it is full of impurities. It's a lower grade than normal salt, but they use that as an argumant to sell it to the ignorant consumers who believe it's a better product.

Just use a 30% less normal salt! (or none, which is what I do, no need to add salt to anything these days the amount they put in everything).
