RJ: so, in the end, our sins are whitewashed and we go to heaven if we accept Jesus sacrifice ? Sounds quite similar to what I said (the main difference being that you switched "believing in God" with "believing in Jesus as our saviour") |
*sigh* No they are not 'whitewashed' because the punishment has been 'paid' for by Christ's blood. Without Christ, we are all going to hell.

Well, it's not like the old Testament doesn't encourage you to genocide your neighbours though. However, I admit I don't know if it gives promises for the afterlife if you kill a Babylonian. |
Not quite a Babylonian but....
quote:
Exodus 32:27
He said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Every man {of you} put his sword upon his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and kill every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor."

What is your definition of good and fair? And why should it be any more valid than mine (or for that matter, that of a pedophile priest)?

I just noticed, that Lincon put it in another thread much more eloquently than I did:

But how do you define a sin?

Protestants, accepting Jesus Christ as your saviour does indeed guarantee salvation and lack of penalty for sins, although I think some mainstream to liberal protestant denominations recognize the possibility of Mortal Sin.
|
It seems inappropriate to gage the priest by protestantism, since his authority would not be recognised. All we would say is that the man never truly believed in God, especially if he were baptised as an infant, and may not have known Christ.
However, we must remember that we are not called to judge other people, to determine whether they will go to heaven or hell. That's God's job. We just have to pick up the pieces afterwards.
I'm going to use my church as an example since that is the one that I know best. When a member starts sinning, and becomes a real problem for the congregation, they are expelled from the church for a period of time until they choose to repent.
Shi could not tell me right now, whether or not he knows that he is saved. Neither could the Catholic priest. Why should we presume to know better?

Did he actually rape any children. I mean forcibly sodomize any who didn't want to? |
He definately did, I believe all these allegations involve unwanted sexual advances.
quote:
Since the mid-1990s, more than 130 people have come forward with horrific childhood tales about how former priest John J. Geoghan allegedly fondled or raped them during a three-decade spree through a half-dozen Greater Boston parishes.
Almost always, his victims were grammar school boys. One was just 4 years old...
According to McSorley, Geoghan, who knew the family from St. Andrew's, learned of his father's suicide and dropped by to offer condolences to his mother, who is schizophrenic. The priest offered to buy Patrick ice cream.
"I felt a little funny about it," McSorley recalled in an interview. "I was 12 years old and he was an old man."
Riding home after getting ice cream, McSorley says, Geoghan consoled him. But then he patted his upper leg and slid his hand up toward his crotch. "I froze up," McSorley said. "I didn't know what to think. Then he put his hand on my genitals and started masturbating me. I was petrified." McSorely added that Geoghan then began masturbating himself. |

I read the story. Didn't seem to say that he actually held someone down and penetrated him. |
Well according to this article
quote: By his own admission, he twice raped a 10-year-old boy. |
