I guess women don't like civ as much as men. Must be because of the long hours, seeing their boyfriend spending all those long hours on the machine, "just one more turn, please?...", etc. just kind of turns them off.

Unfortunately, then they go off and spend long hours with their own machines -- "just one more turn please?" -- and decidedly not being turned off. Except in Alabama, where such machines are illegal.

Dig trenches, with our men being killed off like flies? There isn't time to dig trenches. We'll have to buy them ready made. Here, run out and get some trenches.

Also, another factor might be a masculine power-thurst thing that can be quenched by conquering the AI on diety.
Or it might just be that all the women who play civ are too busy playing civ to come and chat with us. (actual ratio of women who play civ to men who play civ: 5 women per 1 man )

women (not talking about Ribannah or others here )are quite capable of spending hours at the computer - usually
A. surfing the web for materials on careers, celebs, fashions, etc
B. reading and sending email to friends.
The minority who are hard-core about any PC game seem to be heavily drawn to "The Sims"
Of course there are a few who play a variety of other games, including rpgs, adventure games, and even action games. and there are the players of serious strategy games, like civ.
OTOH i've never heard of a female who plays RTS's or grognard type war games.
There are some women oriented gaming sites around, though none i can think of off hand.

My two nieces (ages 7 and 9) have learned the game and spend all their spare time on it. Watch out when they discover these forums.

There's an interview with the developer of The Sims posted on the site at the moment (can't remember where I saw it).
Anyway, it discusses the efforts developers have made to get women more interested in computer games. It is, I think, generally accepted, that many more men play than women.
The Sims guy said that one thing he did was to have a higher than normal proportion of women working on the development (50% or so, from memory). He reckoned this reduced the testosterone level built into a game and also, interestingly, thought it made for a game which would foster a good community (and thereby prolong longevity). Seemingly The Sims equivalent of Apolyton is a lively spot with many stories devised, games shared and co-operative ventures embarked upon - much as here. But with approaching a 50/50 split between the sexes.
I will say this, what the female civvers lack in numbers is made up for in quality. Ribs is a formidable OCCer, Boann is well respected among the MP tribes and the contributions of the half dozen girls and women who regularly post on the OT are always lively.
The threads in which Tiamat and self biased (formerly Edgecrusher) earned their Apolyton Legend status are, in my view, the funniest and (most heart warming) that the site has produced. (For anyone who didn't follow them at the time the first, "Apolyton's Personals" started by Lancer can be found in the Off Topic archive.)
