Its nice to see people with sense now... it was rather demoralizing when all 9 people I asked said T-Rex would lose.... but what do they know

Put an end to popups!

In fact, it seems clear that Ikarus's protestations aside, BOTH the T-Rex and the mighty Bananasaur would defeat an Allosaurus.

hmm... i just know bothered to read your post, Ikarus, and i have a few things to say

quote:
Also, these slow reflexes prevent the massive carnisaur from overwhelming the allosaur with its own attacks. The simplest way to put my reasoning is that the allosaur can attack many times without retaliation from a slower T. Rex.

yeeeeeaaaahhh..... I suppose you have been studying T-Rexes in captivity and know that the had slow reflexes. Of all the arguements youve made, this is the poorest. Even worse than your trying to argue my male lion/female lion anbolgy into your favor.

Just because Rex couldnt run, doesnt mean he could turn quickly. lash his tail quickly, or swiftly turn. He was just a lumbering hulk, tho he is huge. Remember, even tho they think he couldnt run, his massive stride would still get him up to 25 mph... not fast, sure... but I ask you how long you can walk as apposed to how long you can sprint? I can flat out sprint for exactly 51 seconds (with average speed about 7.85 meters/sec, pretty impressive for a human) even if T-Rex's WALK was slower than that (which it is in reality quite a bit faster, but just for the sake of the arguement), i dunno about you but i can walk all day long. Even if he caught a faster sprinter out in the open, all Rex would have to do is walk its ass down.

But this is entirely beside the arguement of who would win in a fight and actually has nothing to do with anything.

You imagine Allosaurus leaping all over T-Rex... well, your right, this is your imagination. You often point to how Allosaurus wasnt much smaller than Rex. If Rex's muscular legs (which are known to have been extremely muscular do to muscle connections on the leg bones)could not even allow him to get into a sprint, then how could a smaller but still very large predator leap? And if he did leap, I imagine allosaurus getting a good hit in, but ultimately getting body checked and knocked to the ground... then its all over.

gotta go

I don't think that's certain at all.

From National Geographic (excerpts):
quote:
Tyrannosaurus Rex Was a Slowpoke

The most feared and revered of the dinosaurs did not have the leg strength to run very fast, if at all, according to a computer model developed by two experts in the mechanical movements of living creatures.

"Large animals need a larger fraction of their body mass as leg muscles in order to do the same things that smaller animals can do, but there is a limit to how large that fraction can be," said John Hutchinson, co-author of the paper and a postdoctoral research fellow in the Biomechanical Engineering Division at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

A classic scene in the movie Jurassic Park, for example, shows T. rex chasing a car that's traveling about 45 miles (72 kilometers) an hour. According to Hutchinson and Garcia's model, that's impossible. Eighty-six percent of T. rex's body mass would have to be leg muscle for the behemoth dinosaur to run that fast.

Farlow's paper also shows that T. rex was at serious risk of injury if it fell. "Because the chance of a fall would be greater at high speeds than while walking, we suggested that Tyrannosaurus might not have been smart to run quickly, even if it was structurally fit to do so," said Farlow.

More citing the same study:
quote:
Scientist: T. rex was no speed demon

Although T. rex stood tall on powerful hind legs, a new study by biomechanical engineers at Stanford University concludes that the animal probably couldn't run very fast, if at all. Its leg muscles just couldn't have been big enough.

The two created a computer model to figure out how much leg muscle a land animal with the bones of T. rex would need to run. They calculated that the dinosaur, at best, could go 10 to 25 miles an hour.

"It's been known for a long time that as things get bigger, they don't move as fast relative to their size, and in fact, as they get really, really big, they can't run at all," Garcia said. "But until now, no one that I know of has tried to predict the cutoffs (in speed), which is what we're doing with our model."

OK, stop with the lion/lionness thing. I spoke too fast and when I tried to correct myself Derek interrupted me, thus making me seem more ignorant.

Also, I do not imagine Allosaurus leaping all over T. Rex, only that he could spring in quickly and get in several bites or claws. (Even if T. Rex would win, I believe the Allosaur would have given the Rex an initial wound.)

Another thing, this sprinting/walking thing is bogus. The Allosaurus would never sprint in this fight, but would be able to quickly get out ofthe reach of the Rex's jaws. (Quick bursts of speed)

Again, I must challenge your argument about Allosaurus being similar to a Rex and not being able to jump. Yes, they are similar in that they are carnivores of the same Order. Yet they are of entirely different Families. Allosaurus can sprint and jump because of it's bone structure, built for hunting and taking down prey larger than itself. Also, the physics of walking is different in each of the dinosaurs legs and movement. As stated earlier in another post, T. Rex's could not run because their legs could not support their mass. This is different in the lighter allosaur.

What a lame poll. Try to spice it up a little.

Let's say 3 allosaurs were carpooling and T-Rex cuts them off while heading to the off-ramp...they are filled with road rage, but when they pull up next to him at a stop light, find out T-Rex has a gun. Meanwhile, 2 bananasaur officers are closing in, ETA 6 minutes.

Who will win?

I think the question is impossible to answer because it's impossible to know for sure what these prehistoric animals were really like.

But I like Tyrannosaurs better.
