Can't confirm this myself, but I was playing a game on Regent tonight as Carthage and the French, stuck on an island to the North was doing pretty well, especially for being stuck in an island with few contacts.
I knocked off one of Joan's annoying settler teams and she promtly sent a fleet of galleys and landed 8 spearman/warrior teams. in four successive galley landings, on roughly the same hilly point. I
I've never seen this before, especially this early in the game.
The AI also seemed to recognize the importance of a large fleet because of its isolation. In previous debug games, it was not uncommon to see civs stuck in islands totally neglect their navies.
It was only because I was the Numidians that I was able to fend off the assault, or otherwise, I wouldn't have had the troops to defend my northern front outside of the units stationed in my city.
Can anyone confirm this? or is this just a one-off fluke. I'm a bit pressed for time to conduct a debug game test, but perhaps someone can...

I think I can confirm.
I played as China and had destroiers.
Greece was an island civ and we were at a LOOOOOOONG war, they pushed out half the world and conquered a whole island (that was mine, and I lost loong story...). they still had old wooden ships, bu they used such a strategy to kill my destoriers!
They bombed it to death and only than attacked it and killed it.
I was suprised to see them use such a smart strategy (btw, I won In the end :-D, conquered that island...)
