interesting neocon quiz from the csm Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

the christian science monitor put up an interesting quiz which tries to peg down your political beliefs.
(isolationist, liberal, realist, neoconservative)

http://www.csmonitor.com/specials/n...neoconQuiz.html

i'm as i suspected: a realist.

quote:
Realist

Realists…

Are guided more by practical considerations than ideological vision
Believe US power is crucial to successful diplomacy - and vice versa
Don't want US policy options unduly limited by world opinion or ethical considerations
Believe strong alliances are important to US interests
Weigh the political costs of foreign action
Believe foreign intervention must be dictated by compelling national interest

Historical realist: President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Modern realist: Secretary of State Colin Powell

Yeah, according to them I´m a realist too, although I wouldn´t see me as 100% realist. But it is more for US guys, nothing for us idealistic Eurocoms.

They called me a liberal. I don't consider myself a liberal at all, so I thought the test was broken, but then I looked at their definitions:

quote:
Liberals…

Are wary of American arrogance and hypocrisy

I agree that we do have some, and it gets out of hand sometimes, but I don't make a huge fuss about it.

quote:
Trace much of today's anti-American hatred to previous US foreign policies.

Of course. There is no other reason for them to hate us.

quote:
Believe political solutions are inherently superior to military solutions

Well, duh. Of course they are. War is hell, even if it is necessary sometimes.

quote:
Believe the US is morally bound to intervene in humanitarian crises

Sure we should intervene, but only of the costs are fairly low and we can actually help instead of enfore a temporary, unwanted ceasefire that only lasts while we have troops there.

quote:
Oppose American imperialism

Any imperialism stinks, and I would oppose American imperialism if I believed we had any.

quote:
Support international law, alliances, and agreements

How else will we get a civilized planet?

quote:
Encourage US participation in the UN

That's the only one I really disagree with. The UN stinks.

quote:
Believe US economic policies must help lift up the world's poor

We should at least refrain from actively harming them, as with farm subsidies.

quote:

Historical liberal: President Woodrow Wilson

Modern liberal: President Jimmy Carter

Great. I get compared to the idealistic fools who failed to do anything useful. Oh well.

As I suspected... although, there were many questions in which I agreed with 2 answers. I took the test again and got a realist result.

I'm probably somewhere in between the two.

Strange I agree with most of the liberal, anda few of the realist definitions, I answered mostly according to those, and I came out as an Isolationist I do agree with the US keeping somewhat out of other nations business, but I don't agree with trade tariffs or quotas, I don't agree that they should cease international trading, I don't agree that they shoul ignore the UN orthe opinion of other nations, and I choose answers that fit this. Oh well.

I am part liberal, part realist and a small part isolationist, but this test puts me up with Pat Buchanan

Liberal - but I guess that's obvious from my posts.
I believe in:
keeping an open mind
seeing the big picture
and not going to war on "feelings".(A local conservative admitted that most of his ideas were based on that). If you're going to kill 1000's, as sometimes may be nessarsary, make sure that you're deciding based on the facts as you see them, not out of anger.

Liberal
Liberals?

Are wary of American arrogance and hypocrisy

Of course

Trace much of today's anti-American hatred to previous US foreign policies.

Believe political solutions are inherently superior to military solutions

Naturally

Believe the US is morally bound to intervene in humanitarian crises

No. I think help should be given if it is asked for. In that respect, I'm isolationist. Of course, in most cases, it is asked for so no problems! Of course, if its asked for, one cant shy away because its not politically or economically convenient.

Oppose American imperialism

I dont like the way this encourages anti-American moaning, I am opposed to all imperialism by default.

Support international law, alliances, and agreements

Goes without saying.

Encourage US participation in the UN

Keep it coming!

Believe US economic policies must help lift up the world's poor

No. I believe economic policies should be such that the world is largely indifferent to them, where they are not benevolent, but of course, its priority is keeping its own nation healthy. Of course, we do live in a global economy!

realpolitic:

I don't think neoconservatism is worthy of critiquing, and I'm not going to repeat past efforts yet again. You can breathe now.

Liberal.

Of course, often I had to pick the least insane of the options offered rather than the one I actually like. This poll is targeted at a population with a very right-wing median.

Well, what the hell else is it going to be from? Is Osama going to come out and say "I hate America because of Tinky-Winky"?
quote:
Believe political solutions are inherently superior to military solutions

Isn't this a conservative-leaning way of saying I don't want people to die?
quote:
Believe the US is morally bound to intervene in humanitarian crises

Eh. If it's asked, yes. But we can't be some global policeman or something.
quote:
Oppose American imperialism

Of course! Like the arrogance one--it always leads to trouble.
quote:
Support international law, alliances, and agreements

Yes, I support that nations should have a couple of set rules to go by...this is another right-leaning way of saying I want peace and order in the world?
quote:
Encourage US participation in the UN

See last one.
quote:
Believe US economic policies must help lift up the world's poor

If we're to be the "moral" nation that helps everyone out, then, yes, this is a must.
quote:

Historical liberal: President Woodrow Wilson
Modern liberal: President Jimmy Carter

Both decent Presidents.

St Leo's got it--the quiz is targeted towards a pop. with a right wing median. If the quiz actually had the real center as the middle, most of the neocons here would have immediately dismissed it
