Every species of Coeleroptera (beetle) is edible to man. Beetles are the most diverse and evolutionarily successful genus on Earth.

I've had great luck fighting roaches with both bait and boric acid. Bait traps are little boxes of poison, you open their "door" and place them in places roaches regularly travel. They stop by for a snack, later they die. The poison is inside the trap, you don't come in contact with it (it looks like sticky brown goop). Good for low-level infestations.
Boric acid is better if you've got a significant problem. It works, IIRC, by irritating their exoskeletons and causing them to loose ... oxygen(???). It's advantages are that it's NOT a poison, and they carry it back to where they live, where other roaches come in contact with it (they clean each other) . The downside is having white powder around the edges of the walls, etc. Then again, the temporary presence of white powder may be far preferrable to the sight of scattering roaches when the lights flick on.
By the way, Shanghai has oddly few insects given its heat and humidity, but the roaches are e-fucking-normous.

No, I'm not talking about any problem here on Apolyton.
I'm talking about my apartment -- why do crickets, beetles, and cockroaches insist on making themselves feel at home in MY apartment?
I am tired of filling the air in my apartment with toxic fumes from Raid.
I want non-toxic, safer alternatives that are still effective in deterring and/or killing these pests -- other than getting insect guts on the bottom of my shoes.
HOW do these pests get into my aparment anyway -- I need to find out where the damn crevices are!
I just cut one cricket's head off a few minutes ago, and now have it trapped in an upside jar to watch and observe it -- it's still alive, so I want to see how long it can live without its head. |

Oh, and student apartment policy says that we cannot have any pets except for fish. Besides, you cannot potty-train a gecko when you let it run loose around your home.
stupid rules |

They're smart enough not to do what you tell them. How many attempts did you make to try to get them to react in whatever way you wanted as a result of some stimulus? How many did it take for the lizards to decide that they wanted no part of the experiment?

hi ,
still teaching one a few new tricks after a couple years , ......
they are way more intelligent then one can imagine , .......
many years ago we had one in the office that even had is favorite screensaver , he would just look at all the moving lines and squares , ....... he would sit there next to you all day , hoping to catch a glimpse of it , .... any other screensaver and he was gone , tested this on different office floors , .......
they are not only better then all that chemical stuff , they are cute , friendly and you get some attention in return from them , .....
on top of that they cost next to nothing , one spray can of the good stuff costs plenty , .......
the same goes for rat and mice , instead of calling an expensive firm , get some cats , way cheaper and loads more fun , ......
have a nice day
