Webmasters, etc. -- a question about pay Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

It seems like there are a lot of guys here who could answer this question, so I'll ask:

My father-in-law runs a very successful web-based business selling medical equipment. Lately the business has grown so much that his webmaster can't handle all the upkeep. Dad-in-law's idea is to keep his webmaster focused on the technical side of the site, but hire his daughter -- my wife, who's a top-notch writer and is about to be between jobs -- to provide content (descriptions of equipment, etc.).

So here's the question: what do "content providers" generally get paid for this kind of thing? Assume an hourly wage here rather than a salary. Any ideas? TIA.

As a job description, sounds as if she is a "copy writer", which is defined by Salary.com as:

quote:
CopyWriter I (Media -- Print)
Writes, proofreads, and edits copy brochures/print and other forms of documents. May assist in estimating production costs, overseeing work done by external suppliers, and preparation of the marketing program. May require a bachelor's degree in a related area and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

(couldn't find the same thing in regards to websites)

Anyway, go to salary.com and work the salary wizard. I got the above by choosing the job category of "Media - Print", typing in my zip code, and clicking continue. Then you'll want to go select a job title that closely matches what your wife is going to do - for the above quote, I selected "CopyWriter I" and then created a basic report.

Btw, I got $29,721/year, which translates to $14.80/hour. You'll want to do it yourself because the salaries are adjusted according to the cost of living of that particular zip code - if I chose NYC (zip 10001) I would've been quoted a salary of $38,883.

It looks like the best job description is "Writer I - Web":

quote:
Writer I - Web (Entry Level)
Researches and writes online content for a company's web site. Stays abreast of current industry standards and techniques to ensure effective content that achieves the organization's goals. May require a bachelor's degree in a related area with 0-3 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a manager.

Median salary is ~$44-45k ($22.35/hr.) where we'll be living, $39-40k ($19.65) where her Dad lives. I sense a negotiation coming on ...
