Johnny Cash, a towering figure in American music spanning country, rock and folk and known worldwide as "The Man in Black," has died, according to hospital officials in Nashville, Tenn. He was 71.

"Johnny died due to complications from diabetes, which resulted in respiratory failure," said Cash's manager, Lou Robin, in a press release issued by Baptist Hospital in Nashville.


The release said Cash died at the hospital at 1 a.m. EDT. He was released from Baptist on Wednesday where he had spent two weeks being treated for an unspecified stomach ailment.

"I hope that friends and fans of Johnny will pray for the Cash family to find comfort during this very difficult time," Robin said.

Just found out he did a cover of NIN's "Hurt". They say the cover and the video were really good. Kinda surprised that he would do a song like that, but I don't doubt that he could pull it off.

Johnny Cash was a great artist who was true to his roots and true to himself. Though I'm not a country music fan, I saw him 3 times. I actually met him briefly once.

He had been in ill health for the past 2-3 years.

I think most people, including himself, knew that he was on the way out.

It's sad, but on the other hand, it is also fitting, that he went out at the absolute top of his game. I haven't been able to go anywhere without hearing his cover of "Hurt", which is a really great record and easily the best rock record of the year and is enjoyed by pretty much everyone I know.

A Johnny Cash story.

I was at the Glastonbury festival he played, in the "oldie slot" on the main stage. He got a massive crowd- these were the days when anyone could jump the fence- it could have been 100,000 people. The warmth of the reception he got was brilliant. Everyone cheered, laughed at the funny songs and sang along with "Ring of fire".

His voice kept cracking up, though, and by the end of the concert he was struggling a bit. I assumed he had a sore throat or something. However a few days later I was listening to Andy Kershaw on the radio, and he'd accompanied Cash to the show.

It seems that Cash had no idea what Glastonbury was about. He'd been asleep on the drive to Pilton in a limo with blacked-out windows. He'd gone on stage expecting to play to maybe a few hundred old country fans. Instead he found himself looking at the biggest crowd he'd ever played to, and everyone was worshipping him.

Turns out the reason his voice was cracking was that he couldn't stop crying. Bye, Johnny. Missing you already.

Today is a sad day, not only for country music, but music in general. Johnny cash has contributed so much to almost every style of music. He might be dead, but the Man in Black's inflence on the music Industry will be heard for long long time.
