The school kids mainly do the simple work that has to be done all the time. There are of course always some "qualified" people working during the summer (and have their five weeks off at some other time) to make sure the country stays alive, but only very few people have those kind of jobs if you think about it.

Oh, and Rah is right, in some of the regions in Germany where they have most free days and 35h work (or even less) per week they have also the most productive industry (eg car builders).

If you place restrictions on people's ability to work, the least productive will be eliminated from the workforce. Think about it.

No, you'll need more worker to acomplish the same thing since you can't work them 40-50 hours a week.

Wow, I think 37.5 hours is too much...
Then again it wasn't that long ago when we had the same conditions as Korea, say 30 years.

And wasn't there a study fairly recent that said English had the longest working hors in Europe but were the least productive workers?

It's no good working longer then 8 hours anyway. I know I do the same amount of work in 6 hours then I can do in 12 if I know I only have to work 6

I mistrust statistics like these. They usually take in account only regular hours. But alone in Germany the overtime hours worked per year would make up almost one million new jobs.

37 hours per week is my "normal" minimum, but I'm expected to work up to 20 hours more per month without extra pay, when the necessity emerges, which happens, but not continuously. If I work yet more, I get paid for the hours exceeding this 20 hours limit. If somebody asks me about my regular work time, I'd answer 37/week, but the de facto average is somewhere around 40, with peaks up to 50 or even 60. I don't think this is not enough.

As for vacation, yea, 6 paid weeks per year is a bit more than the poor exploited people overseas get, but ... well ... as compensation you are a superpower, if this makes you feel better. *points and laughs* *shows solidarity*

If that's freelance work, it's for your own profit. If you're an employee, your employer should pay you good. If none of these assumptions is true, it's ... ... your own fault.

Increase Your PM Length

My employer pays me time-and-a-half for each and every hour over 40, unless it's the seventh straight day I've worked -- then it's double time.

That's good conditions and explains your eagerness to work more than 70. As long as you don't permanently hurt your health, that is. You can't buy it back for no money, you know. A gastric ulcer is a nasty thing, and it's not the worst that can happen.

I get +25% for overtime (exceeding 20 hours/month) and +50% if it's on Sundays. Not quite as good, but for me it's ok.

I used to get time-and-a-half for any hour over 35 hours, that brought me up to £8.03 an hour, around $13/h.

Wait a minute...the Dutch are 19% more productive than the Americans, work ~500 fewer hours a year, AND have legal pot, legal prostitution, and really great beer?
