Well, thanks to your whishes (well not really but it sounded well) I just got a job with the NYC council doing constituent services for a councilman in queens..now, the thing is that given the poor budget picture, I am assured a job only up to the end of the year, and then whether I keep the job will depend on the budget.

Well, at least that's 3 months of work

Congrats GePap! It is just the beginning for you I know. WHile I have found most of your opinions to be vastly different than mine, I almost always believe them to be well thought out and supported positions. This characteristic can be nothing but a benefit to your new employer. Good Luck!!

I somewhat agree, Plato. GePap at least tries to justify the insane positions of the left. I really enjoy his posts.

Good luck, GePap, in your new job!

Thank you all I start on monday.Sure, on average, per hours worked given my salary I will be somewhere between Indian rice paddy worker and Indonesian Nike employee in terms of base pay, though the city has a nice set of health plans and transportation plans, and the experience will be pricelss..actually, on friday I went in to get my immense pile oh beaurocratic paperwork to fill to be an employye of NYC and ended up spending 4.5 hours stuffing papers into envelopes (though this will NOT be my work, since I get a desk and everthing), including one letter to Rupert Murdoch....now, why a democratic Councilman from Queens has Rupert Murdoch (and George Steinbrenner actually) in his mailing list I will never know.

A kid I know/knew used to wash dishes in a restaurant were my wife was a cook, then he went to collage, then Law School, became a lawyer and later went to work for B. Boxer. He is still on her staff. Not sure if he is C of S however.
Of course I dislike Boxes and would not vote for her.

Well done, sir!

Can I give a bit of advice? Don't wait until the end of the year to start sending your resume out; begin looking around next month. The Laws of Dating also apply to job-hunting: it's much easier to get one when you already have one.

Anyway, good luck!

The job is, well, interesting...

In theory, I should work only 35 hours a week, (I assume 8 hour days with 1 hour of breaks), but I am working 10 hours a day most of the time, and that is after subtracting the breaks.

I have to deal with lots of constituents, including some that are, well, crazy. A guy today came in and it took three hours to get him to leave..there was little we could do fr him, cause he had a whole range of problems, including mental. Some problems, like Sanitation and Transporation we can help with, with legal matters we can't. And the process is slow...it takes weeks from person calling in to letter going out, then months for the city agency to get back...it never ends.

I also get to go lots of time to City Hall..including today, and tommorrow. It's not that impressive, but beats sitting at home. And it's election time, so the office is also working on getting this guy re-elected... things will be much calmer come Nov. 5.

When I was 17 I got an internship with a state representative. It was interesting to say the least. I ended up answering the mail and the phones and doing research on constituent problems. I had no idea what I was doing, but like the soldier who was ordered by Rommel to escort over a hundred prisoners of war back through the lines to the German side of no man's land (armed only with a bolt action rifle), I accomplished my mission mainly because no one informed me that it was impossible. Anyway, it sounds like you have a very interesting job, and are far better prepared for it than I was for mine. Good luck, and be sure to share any interesting or amusing anecdotes.

I am a bit frightened though (not much, but a twinge) that a group that appears so sophmoric handles a budget bigger than that of 48 states in the Union (save NY State and California).

Another tough thing is getting cases from people for which you can;t possibly do anything becuase it is out of your jurisdiction. Sometimes they understand that, sometimes not.
