The "Greats of Boxing" Thread. Tired of ads?

Anyone else here a fight fan?

For me Roy Jones Jr. is king of the ring right now, but here's a couple of lists.

Pound for Pound All Time

1. Sugar Ray Robinson
2. Muhammad Ali
3. Joe Louis
4. Rocky Marciano
5. Jack Johnson

Honorable mention: Archie Moore, Mike Tyson, Carlos Monzon

Greatest Fights

1. Moore vs. Durelle
2. Ali vs. Frazier III
3. Walcott vs. Marciano
4. Ali vs. Williams
5. Gatti vs Ward I

Honorable mention: Ali vs. Frazier I; Ali vs. Foreman; Hagler vs. Leonard; Hearns vs. Leonard I; Hagler vs. Hearns; Dempsey vs. Willard; Louis vs. Conn; Tyson vs. Holyfield; Robinson vs. LaMotta.

Best Knockout

1. Marciano KO Walcott (a short punch, but Joe is history)
2. Ali KO Williams
2. Tyson KO Spinks
3. Foreman KO Frazier (that one's a massacre)
4. Johanssen KO Patterson
5. Hagler KO Hearns.

What have you been smoking, Sloww? Even Ali has admitted that Robinson was better pound for pound than he was.

That doesn't mean that Sloww has to agree with him .

After all, Magic Johnson has said Michael Jordan is the 'best basketball player of all time', but I don't have to believe him .

Suffering from ads?

Roy Jones, Jr?

How can you tell?

He fights nobody, and don't give me that John Ruiz crap either.

I watched a fight on NBC last week that lasted 34 seconds.

Rocky Juarez from Houston knocked a guy out with aleft hook that was a sight to behold, when the guy woke up on the mat, he immediately threw a couple of jabs, thinking he was still fighting.

ACK!

Off topic but to do with boxing.

If anybody outside of the U.K gets to see any of our fights look out for David Hayes. He is a cruiser/heavy and while he may never be great, he is our most exciting young talent and has a great pedigree(World Am silver against a good cuban who was about 8? years older and that he dropped in the first round).

Oh, sorry, yeah, Archie Moore was a great pound for pound fighter.

Y'all are crazy.

The only time anyone ever shut up Ali was Joe Louis, when Ali was still champ the second time. Some benefit got together all the current and former heavyweight champions they could (IIRC, there were 6, including Ali, Frazier and Louis), and Ali was running his mouth as usual about how he was the greatest.

Louis just snorted, and then Ali went off about how Louis's career record was inflated by the "Bum of the Month club, so Louis wasn't that great. Louis just looked at motormouth right in the eye and all he said is "You would have been one of the bums." And Ali just deflated.

Louis KO'd five world heavyweight champions, he still defended his title sucessfully more times than anyone in history, and even if you knock him for the Bum of the Month club (everyone was a bum compared to Louis), he lost four years of opportunity to defend his title during WW2 military service.

Look at the film of the Louis-Schmelling rematch, and tell me there's any boxer ever made who could stand up to Louis,

Even on a pound for pound basis, I'd rank Louis #1

My list:

Joe Louis
Rocky Marciano - 49-0, 11 first round KO's, don't like it, too bad.
Sugar Ray Robinson
Carlos Monzon
Sugar Ray Leonard (depending on which weight - five titles in five weight classes still qualifies)
Tony Canzoneri
Marvelous Marvin Hagler

Ol' Howard the Mouth had no problem with it when he was making money off of it. It's an olympic sport, and references go back at least to Homer, so it's a sport.

There's not a lot I can say about the old boys as I've seen next to nothing of their fights. Of the one I have seen, the following are my picks.

Marvin Hagler
Tommy Hearns
Wilfred Benitez
Sugar Ray Leonard

Best fights I've seen were Watson v Eubanks and Benn v McClelland. It's just unfortunate that those two bouts both ended with a man crippled.

Amateur boxing still has some dignity. But the professionals are going down the tubes fast - it's starting to look like something this side of pro wrestling.

There's some great up-and-coming boxers coming out of the Kronk gym, and I hope they breathe new life into pro boxing soon.

Marciano beat nobody except old fighters and pumped up light heavyweights, IMO he looses to (at least!), Ali, Liston, Foreman, Lewis, Holmes, Tyson, (a prime) Louis and probally Frazier

Top 5 P4P

1 Robinson
2 Ali
=3 Duran
=3 Leonard
5 Hagler

Yep, I'm biased towards the 80's 'fab four' but thats what I grew up watching

Yes and no, since it's not just a couple o' sides of beef pounding the bejeezuz outta each other. On the other hand, taking shots to the head over a period of time just isn't good for your brain, even with head protection. Your brain still bounces around inside your skull.
