What are we going to do at this stage of the war? Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Because I still don't have proper internet access at home yet and I can't be online in the chat at times you Americans and other guys of the american timezone are online, I created this thread to discuss our defensive (or offensive) policy.

Central question: What are we going to do at this stage of the war?

Please post here your ideas about what we should do now. Please write down too what troops you plan to use and how much time your operation(s) will eventually cost. This includes time for preparations too.

Got spare money?

A copy of the critics I made in the other thread:

Will our troops still be on that mountain by the time we have completed that road, and why are we moving troops on that mountain? Just to occupy the mountain? Look at all those ND forces that are nearby, this is not a good strategy.

With all those ND forces nearby our troops will soon be slauthered and our current number of troops is far too small to occupy the city.

IF we decide to attack, please attack with maximum power so that we can be sure not only to free the city, but also to KEEP it.

Just now ND is waiting for us to invade the city, to then defeat our troops and occupy it for temselves.

Let us wait until we can see that GS really arrives or informs us of their position. Alone we can't do anything useful against those two.

Yes, but if we move workers on that mountain to road it, it will take a lot of turns to do that. In the meanwhile ND and GoW have plenty of time to defeat our little army there.

What if GoW has catapults and they would move them into Salamanca to bombard us? Even though the chance of success may not be very large, there will be a moment that they succeed to damage our troops there, in other words, that they create an opportunity to attack. We can be sure that GoW or ND will use that opportunity.

I say: the risk of being defeated on that mountain is too great with such a small number of regiments (units).

Therefore my advise is:

Don't try to attack them without coordinating it with GS. We can only be succesful in a joint attack. If GS can't manage to show up south of Salamanca with a reasonable number of troops, planning an attack is ridiculous.

1) IF GS can manage to move some troops towards Salamanca so that we have together a reasonable force, ONLY THEN we might consider an attack.

2) IF we consider an attack because GS indicates that they have enough troops to join in an attack, please don't send but a few regiments "because we don't want to risk to loose a lot".
Those of you who have some experience in the army must have heard the term "deterrence strategy" at least once. It means that if you have a big army, others, even if they have a big army too, will not likely attack your army because they fear that it will result in a massacre.

If you only send a small amount of troops, the eventual losses would be quite small for the enemy and they will probably decide that it's "worth trying" to attack.

In other words: If we send a BIG (AT LEAST 12 units, but rather more) army
to that mountain, ND or GoW will not likely attack us, especially if they know of the presence of GS troops nearby.

However, since the war turned out in big losses for us, we decided to stay in Pamplona and await the attack. The attack did not come because both the Chinese and the Moors don't know the word bravery, only treachery.
In the meanwhile we developped the strategy to stay in Pamplona and wait for GS to free us.

Very well, but if we now want to change from a defensive to an offensive strategy, we have to completely change it and not just for a bit, otherwise "the food doesn't taste like meat nor like fish" as we use to say in the Netherlands: you won't get the benefits of one, nor of the other: you get the worst of both.

Aidun, I agree with you

As I've already said, I must insist to the need of a coordinated attack with GS. This attack mean :

1. A map with the positions and compositions of the friends armies involved.
2. An estimation of the positions and number of the ennemies armies
3. Clear lines of moves (red arrows on the map)
4. A timeline for the attacks.

My feeling is that at the moment there is no coordination with GS at all. The two Generals must seat together and decide together what to do, and present this plan to us.

I am sorry for not to be able to participate in chats. However, I would help to make decisions if we could have the more accurate informations as exposed above.

The coordination with GS is being a bit hard, they are almost never online; though I am doing my best to get them to a common turnchat. As for the mountain, I disagree, they won´t attack us right now, in my humble opinion. Catapults are slow and take a concentrated effort to utilize, so they probably don´t have many with them in the south. Even if they have, they won´t be able to know how many units we have in the mountain, and we have means to see them coming in case of a slow, catapult-supported strike.
Anyway it is great to have people talking about it here .
Nuke
PS:. Ah yeah, about the food not tasting like food nor fish, I agree. That is why me and bigfree are organizing an attack in the heartland of GoW for soon, and we´re analysing the possibilities of striking isolated elements of GoW.

I will do my best to contact them when I have ADSL again. NYE or another member of GS was oftenly online when I used to be online before I stopped my subscription at my ADSL provider.

Still I stronly ask you, my Lord Winterius, to choose between either option and don't try to mix them: offensive and defensive strategy cannot be mixed.

Could you inform us of what units you are planning to use in an attack on the GoW heartland? Knights, archers, infantry? I favor knights, but they are pretty expensive and for every knight we can produce 2 infantry units to use in our armies here. Take this into consideration: What you win in mobility (troops can move 2 instead of 1), you loose in strength (the amount of produced ( = available) knights you can have is but half of the amount of infantry produced in the same time).

Thus we have 4 options:
1) Defensive strategy
2) Offensive strategy with mobile troops (knights)
3) Offensive strategy with double amount of troops, but less mobile.
4) A combination of 2 and 3.

Señor Aidun,

Don't forget that the knights can retreat from battle. This is a very interesting thing ! Thus, I recommend the mix of your 2 and 3 options.

Suffering from ads?

I agree with the idea of waiting on the mountains until we can strike "El Álamo" with maximum force.

One thing about attacking GoW territory: I like the idea because It could force them to switch to a defensive strategy and allow us to take control of the war, but I think that in our present situation we cannot afford to divide our weak army.

It could be done after Salamanca is retaken and GS is in position to defend the nearby mountains.

Don't forget that we cannot currently build Knights for lack of Horses.

GS lost 8 Cats to GoW/ND. Last I heard they were contemplating either trying to get them back or an alternate attack plan. I think they have played their turn now. I will ask what happend the very next time I see one of them on-line.

Our idea is for more of a small-sized raid on GoW mainland, not a full scale offensive. Also, Aidun, I disagree that offensive and defensive strategies cannot be mixed.

My Lord Winterius,

What troops do you think would be suitable for your plan? I suppose you have thought about that, otherwise it is wise to think about it and bring it up for discussion in this thread.

And second, can you bring up arguments why defensive and offensive strategy can be combined? I (and Lord Astronius too?) still have the opinion that it cannot be combined. Please convince me that I am wrong on this point and point out how you think of both continuing the defensive strategy we used until recently and the new offensive strategy, without having two weak strategies.

Soldier Libre and my Lord Winterius,

Lack of certain resources limits the amount of optional strategies and has consequenses for the kind of strategy that you intend to use: offensive or defensive, mobile or less mobile.

Infantry is less mobile and thus less suitable for a quick raiding operation, while knichts are faster, and can retreat and are thus quite suitable for a quick raiding operation.

Infantry is relatively cheap, compared to knights, so you can build twice of them in the same amount of time. If you want to attack a city, infantry is quite useful because you can send loads of them and can attack with enormous power and you don't need to aproach secretly because the enemy is already expecting you.

[ooc]These are but some basic strategic ideas of which I believe they apply to Civ3 too.[/ooc]

Put an end to popups!

The move on the mountain near Salamanca with limited forces could have only one purpose : to induce the ennemy to bring reinforcements to Salamanca. To be taken seriously, it would require the building of a road in ONE turn, then 10 cats the following turn.

As I understand that we cannot do that right now, we have better to wait until it will be usefull to force the ennemy to make difficult choices. Until then, the most we can do are some random moves around Pamplona, within one turn of the city forcing the ennemy to wonder about our intents.

Full PM-box? Change here!

The original plan , as you all know, is to build a road and bring cats to that mountain.

And Aidun, yes, I´ve tought about what forces are we using in this raid, it will be a seaborne raid conducted by pikemen who are already moving toward their location (mariner pikes is not just a name that was chosen at random). The info our boats provided clearly shows that the GoW has let their coast open and undefended, and we plan on aproaching that area and puting our soldiers within operational range from GoW territory. AS said, it is not an offensive mission. And also, the knightsw are being kept for homeland security purposes , leaving no gap at all.
We are also thinking about further expanding our operational capacities in the area next to Pamplona, and that stack fits this purpose well, giving us the possibility to withdraw if this is the case.

The post I made yesterday has apparently been deleted. My Lord Winterius, you intend to scare the Chinese? Not a bad strategy I think, it makes them believe we are stronger than we really are, but do you think they will really retreat troops so we can conquer our cities back?

It won´t make them retreat all their divisions, surely not, but it will divert their attention, at least. Also, it shall divert production to cheaper units and this kind of thing, and hopefully we´ll be able to destroy some land improvements in the process, diminishing their production capacities. Also , from the cease-fire pleads they have sent us we can presume they are needing some time to recover strenght, and this plan takes advantages from this fact, pressing them when they are tired.

News came sooner than expected.

Interesting thing are the riders just south of Salamanca, that are half hidden behind that right-click menu.

It seems that GoW is strengthening the city and expects a full-scale attack.

The question I offer you is what tactics Gow and ND will develop together: Will they gift the city to ND when they see that their situation is desperate or simply abandon it?

Which is better for them?

And what will we do in either scenario?

What scared em was the massive amount of cavalry looking 1 from Alamo: 8 ND´s cavalry units: 2 being elite and the rest (6 ) veterans, + 4 pikemen, all veterans too.

In response to Togas's post in the 290 AD Orders thread:

We need info of GS, preferably a map with the amounts an strenths of their troops and their plans. In the meanwhile I think the best we can do is to build units and finish the road through the mountains and eventually build a fortress.

Some, at least to me, interesting idea might be to contact GS about destroying the infrastucture in the by GoW conquered part of Spain. That makes them a lot more vulnerable to an attack.

I also think that it would be interesting to suggest that we are going to attack Salamanca and capture Merida instead when troops have been moved from Merida to Salamanca.

In this strategy our role is to suggest a mass attack on Salamanca and GS could occupy Merida in the meanwhile.
