quote: Australia 'world's gayest country'
23sep03
MORE than 17 per cent of Australians are involved in gay or lesbian relationships, putting the country equal first in the world for its proportion of homosexuals, according to a new worldwide survey.
The survey of sexual habits by international condom maker Durex found that together with Americans, Australians had the highest proportion of same-sex relationships.
At the other end of the scale, Vietnam recorded the lowest proportion of gay and lesbian relationships, at three per cent.
The company said Australians enjoyed a busy love life, having sex on average 125 times per year.
Hungarians came out on top, having sex 152 times per year.
But Australians were still ahead of Americans, at 118 times a year.
The survey also found phone, text and cyber sex were gaining in popularity in Australia, with 43 per cent indulging in "virtual reality sex".
The company said faking orgasms was also common in Australia, with 47 per cent of respondents admitting to doing so at least once.
This was almost twice the global average of 26 per cent.
The survey found 41 per cent of Australian men and women had sex for the first time because they were in love, and most agreed that more foreplay would improve their sex life.
The company said more than 150,000 people took part in the on-line survey, which was now in its seventh year.

Should it be Queer Eye for the Australian Guy now? I didn't know Australia was this disposed toward homosexuality...

A similar survey of Agathon's home country found that nearly 80% of men had been involved in a 'meaningful' relationship with New Zealand's majority mammalian inhabitant, the sheep. All those weepy ewes at Auckland International airport...
And before anyone repeats the tired old penal colony adage again... New South Wales was a penal colony, 'Australia' wasn't. Australia is made up of two territories, the A.C.T. and Northern Territory, and six states. Not all of these were penal colonies. Besides which, given that some of the Tolpuddle Martyrs were sent here for their political crimes, I'd have been glad to have been counted in their number.
Anyway, a lot of the gay inhabitants appear to be from abroad- like me, Chip and Reichen from the 'Amazing Race' (America, please send more exports like those- they were very easy on the eye) and believe it or not, gay Kiwis. The latter are the ones who get the butcher's shops confused with porno outlets and family planning clinics.
Miriam Margolyes (the British lesbian actress) is taking up residence in New South Wales, in the Blue Mountains.
Ian Roberts was Australia's first out gay sporting icon:

Dunno, never tried one.
To be honest the results of this survey sound like bullsh1t. Approx. 1 in 6 people gay? I don't think so. You've always got to be sceptical about on-line surveys, as they very rarely produce an unbiased sample of the population.
Apart from that, the survey was conducted by condom manufacturer, Durex - in all likelihood you had a bunch of gays shopping around for their "truck tyre" condoms. There are simply too many unknown factors.
As for Kiwi sheep-sh@ggers, that's a whole other story...

While the self selected sample can not be called a "true" representative pop. sample, one in six sounds believable to me. most people may not be gay, gay, gay, but alot of people engage in homosexual behavior yet would never self identify as gay. There's alot of situational homos out there. Not to mention all the bi's. |
The survey quantifies those who "are involved in gay or lesbian relationships". Whilst there is no strict definition of a homosexual relationship here, I would suggest this does not include those who "dabble" in this area.

Online surveys have a built in bias because they only capture the people who feel like responding instead of getting a true satistical distribution. |
Not only this, but potential survey participants are actually filtered out prior to this stage. For example: What demographic is likely to own a computer connected to the Internet? Who is visiting the Durex site? etc

This doesn't surprise me.
In 1994, Harvard found that 20.8% of men and 17.8% of women have admitted to same-sex attraction and behavior. |
I have heard stats that say that the average number of homosexual partners for a straight person is over 1

(same set of stats that said that homosexuals averaged more partners than straights)
