	Alliance with CFC? Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Lately the issue of alliance with CFC has been brought up. We had informally chatted about this with Octavian a few weeks ago, today in the chat he brought it up. In the first chat I had brought up five points on which to base any potential alliance, these are:


1) Non-Agression Pact

2) Coordination of Military Planning

3) Technological collaboration (this doesn't mean gifting, simply not refusing tech trades which are appropriately compensated)

4) Maritime Right-of-Passage

5) Common diplomatic front


We have also mentioned the splitting up part of the continent. We suggested (informally of course) to split at the chokepoints with perhaps giving BoP to CFC. Militarily BoP serves no purpose to us as with the northern chokepoint we basically control the inland sea. Anything more than BoP is totally out of the question IMO since we will be doing most of the fighting.

My personal reservations on this are:

1) knowledge of the size and potential power of the other continent.

2) outcome of the GWT-CGN war.

3) How much we can ultimately trust CFC.


Talking with Octavian for months now, IMO they are trustworthy and can be a reliable ally. Let's discuss.

In the short term, it would be nice if they can join our war against GCA in a few turns - if only to divert part of their army.

If we're going to set up some common diplomatic front, we'd better create a new Forum for the people of Apolyton and CFC to commonly discuss issues.

We might need CFC if we can't bring down GCA on our own or if we suffer so many losses that the victor of the other continent can come in and destroy us.

Whatever we do, I'd prefer (if possible) not to set up any long-term binding agreements with CFC. We can decide the issue of whether to ally with them or wipe them out based upon their conduct over the period of the war and our own success in that war.

By the end of the war, we'll likely have a FAR better idea of whether it is feasible to wipe out CFC and whether it is desirable to do so.

CFC is our ally as far as this war goes, so we must treat them as such and be very cordial in chats with them. However, we still must obey the thread on what information is classified and what is not.

Still, I see no issue with letting CFC know which city we are attacking - at least as far as when we get to Server Fire - but not much beyond that. CFC is researching Monotheism, and this will take them another 20-odd turns We may well trade with them for this, but beyond then is far in the future indeed. By that time we will know what position we stand in after GCA, and can more appropriately make up our foreign policy.

GCA is our TEMPORARY ally. We must tell them what is needed to keep them on side for the duration of the larger part of the war, but commit to nothing further, since they will likely be the next target. If circumstances dictate, we may be bound with CFC for some time, but ATM so much is dependent on the following 10-20 turns we dare not commit that much.

From the other threads, it would appear that after the GCA war, we expect to be in tech/builders race to the finish against the other continent, which hopefully we can maintain in a wonderful balance of endless war.

Therefore, having an ally to speed up the tech race would be great. We will need to ensure that we keep a close eye on a possible CFC-other continent alliance, and we will need to somehow ensure we control tech trades out of the CFC-Poly alliance.

Question - will CFC be content to play such a role? Or will they go kamikaze on us? That might be the more critical question.

But in the short term - no question. We make an alliance, and make it worth their while to be in it.

Yes we need an alliance, but we should as has been mentioned earlier make sure that their attack is delay a few turns. Ideally this staggered attack will catch GCA in a force redistribution and force them to basically waste several moves redeploying forces.

Obviously it also has the advanatge of damaging GCA forces with no loss to us. We even gain because even though it isn't planned, it might be desirable at some later point to consolidate the whole continent under our enlightened rule and the weaker cfc is, the better.
