In comparisons of the SPDG, RP and ISDG:
Myself - SPDG Look at my sig and you'll see. RP - Govenors of several cities, Slave master unitl I had to devote my whole time to the ISDG because of RL issues.
Bigfree - New and vocal Person but he joined RP about the same time that he joined here, and then had quickly become a consul.
NYE - Former SPDG Member of the court, presiding over several DG law issues. Helped to codify the New Con in the SPDG. Current member of GS (not RP).
MrWIA - 3 time president of the SPDG, and president of other DG's that are Civ related. He's not really active in RP.
Trip - Founder of several DG and in various positions in all of them. Yes, he lead Lux to their Demise, but has the trust of the whole of the consuls and ministers.
Togas - Former Head of the FAM in the SPDG for several terms, helped to codify the New Con in that game. Later, a member of the court. Founder and Current head of RP team.
WhiteBandit - Former minister in the SPDG that delt with the workers (can't remember the exact designation). I think he's doing the same in RP, but don't quote me on it.
MasterZen - Relatively new to both PBEM DG's. Warmonger and master of evil plans, extrodinare. Member of GoW. Trusted by all of the others for Diplomatic contacts.
Arnelos - Former President and FAM for the SPDG. Head of that game's DIA political party. Former Govenor of Madrid on the RP team. I again, don't know what has been happening there, so I can't say what exactly he's doing now.
And then a whole cast of other deputies, from all of the PTWDG teams.

I would REALLY like it, if we do not bring in the PTWDG1 into this game. Part of the reason I came to the isdg was to once again be on the same side with people I like and respect. For whatever reason there seems to be some real hostility in the PTWDG and I do not like that in a game whose purpose is enjoyment. For me personally I could just have easily been a member of RP instead of GOW(I think the deciison was based on the fact that GOW had less people at the time).
I admit I lurked here for around a month before becoming active and this was the first chat so I don't have a good feel of how the chats normally proceed. However, from my own personal experience running chats is very stressful for the person actually doing them and that is why the default position is almost always "We do what the orders say".
Also for the record in this chat regardless of appearances the consuls did do what the people in chat wanted(ie no GA started). But I also see how anger could be generated and I actually generated much anger myself(which I later regretted) in the infamous ROP/alliance chat in the SPDG. So I see both sides, however my advice is to just calm down and chalk this whole thing up to experience.

Domestic Minister and Supreme Military Commander, if I recall correctly.

Wasn't he originally from Lux Invicta? Anyhow, BigFree was in charge of RP Diplomacy for a long time until after the war started.

He was the Chief Justice of the Court for longer than most of us can probably remember

You basically said it.

Essentially founded both the SPDG and the PTWDG1 and certainly did most of the initial organization for both of them. Was the first President of the SPDG.

Togas - Former Head of the FAM in the SPDG for several terms, helped to codify the New Con in that game. Later, a member of the court. Founder and Current head of RP team.

He was the Chief Justice of the Court after NYE left the office. He was also Vice President in the SPDG.

He was the Minister of Public Works in the SPDG for 2 terms. Wasn't he also on Lux Invicta before coming to RP?

He's been FAM of the GoW for some time, I believe. He's also been President of the Spanish SPDG multiple times.

I was also Vice President (under one of MrWIA's 3 terms) and Supreme Military Commander (the all builder cabinet term!). During the first month or so of the PTWDG, I was the Vice President/FAM-equivalent until I left for several months. I haven't held any official position since coming back until very recently after the war started (I replaced BigFree as the FAM).
I'm not really in the leadership of the ISDG, though. I helped with the set-up of the game a tiny bit, served for 2 weeks as a Deputy Consul a month back (didn't get to do much), and was just named this week as an ambassador to CGN. I've mostly been a Citizen, and proud of it

You forgot BFM, who people seem to have a habit of forgeting when it comes to naming the ministers here. That works fairly well when naming who our ministers are to foreign leaders, however, since we'd rather they just didn't know about BFM's position.
BFM was the FAM of Lux Invicta, if I recall correctly. As for the SPDG, he's been doing organizational stuff to help out along with good advice for so long that it's hard to remember. He's been one hell of a solid citizen of Apolytonian DG's for a very very long time.
Dominae was not an SPDG regular from what I recall, but I believe he's been a longtime regular of the Strategy Forums here on Apolyton and he's certainly taught a lot of us a thing or two about micromanaging, building, and Civ3 Strategy. He's also on GS in the PTWDG.
Aggie, who is Trip's deputy in the Ministry of War, is the leader of the Glory of War in the PTWDG. He served as President, Supreme Military Commander, and Vice President in the SPDG. He apparently was the General-figure for GoW before becoming their leader (?).
ZargonX is also a member of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, though I don't know/remember what exactly his job was since I was gone during the months in which that was probably more decisive. Regardless, he's still on the staff and does help out. He's been the leader of Legoland in the PTWDG.
vondrack was the leader of Legoland in the PTWDG and was a Consul here in the ISDG (he was replaced by BigFree when he resigned, I believe). vondrack still works his tail off for us on the turn reports, which is probably more work than half of the official deputies do.
I thought Panzer32 of GoW leadership and SPDG fame was also your deputy, E_T, or did I miss something?

BigFree is actually older than most of us here in 'poly, however he was also a relative newcomer here as well. When this game started I talked to Togas about being the Deputy FAM, frankly I had no experience in demo games at all except in the very low-key spanish demo game (which I am no longer active), I think I convinced him with my record of UN Modeling.
At the same time we soon got contact with CDG and later GCA. At this point the chat was in its infancy, only a few of us were there at night and we basically goofed of all the time. We decided on BigFree for the job of ambassador to CDG, and later WB for GCA. As time passed he got more involved in the builder debates and thus was highly regarded of when vondrack quit and needed a replacement. He, as well as WB, joined Roleplay much much later, and was not a member of any other PTWDG team before.
As for my fellow GoWers,
Panzer32 has usually been our builder, but also served as Emperor before the war for about 2 months or more. He is currently the Consul of the Interior, making sure our cities produce enough Riders to crush our squid and chicken enemies.
Aggie was pretty much inactive when I joined GoW, when war was brewing the smell of blood probably got to him and became our "CoW" (you know what that means). He is now our Emperor, and mere RP mortals tremble at the very sound of his name.
Me, I'm the CoFA of GoW, but since there is no diplomacy anymore I'm in all respects unemployed (or so I'm making you think).

I was going to skim over all those credentials, but ended up quite enjoying reading through them all. Nice to see we've got a lot of experience here!

The solution is simple: when faced with opposition over a decision, even if it is last minute, accept, and discuss, especially when all people involved in the planning are present. And if a decision is taken against the will of the majority, at least give an explanation on why that was taken and say because it was decided on (when in reality it wasn't).
It does not involve a constitutional change, it does not involve replacing Consuls. It simply involves changing the mindset of those in leadership from shrugging off complaints with the "it is because I say it is and your opinion doesn't count" attitute with a mindset which is open to disagreements and willing to debate and compromise.

I wholeheartedly agree. Normally no such thing has happened in the turnchats as there have been fewer in the chat, and less important on-the-fly decisions to make. It is our experiences of previous chats that have formed at least my estimation of what the last (and following) chat would be like. However it is now clear this was an error. This will be much more like the SPDG chats, where all had a proper say, and substantial discussion followed various planned orders. The "do this because I say it is so" is not quite the right assessment of it though. It is more the "we're doing it this way because that is how it was planned and you may just be acting difficult all of a sudden" It is clear that we got it wrong to think like this with the GA issue, but often this IS the case. We ARE normally better informed than the average team-member - we HAVE to be - but from now on we'll try to ensure we answer the question of "where was this decided?", and if it hasn't, we will discuss it.
Now however, we are facing perhaps the most important turns of the game, and the best option is ALWAYS to have the whole team involved as much as possible. So, we will take our time with these important chats, and use some of that huge amount of saved hours we have in the counter at the UN.
As I have posted elsewhere, I have proposed that no less than Two Consuls be available before the save is
played, unless there is a really good reason a Consul has to play alone. Furthermore, it will be necessary to have Trip and E_T there most of the time. This will reduce our available playing times considerably, and correspondingly mean that maybe 24 hours or more may elapse with us still to play the turn. BUT, we will be doing it right, hopefully.
I hope this assuages all concerns about this - we stuffed up, and we are hoping to change. I also hope everyone understands this. We ain't the dictators that at times posts can make us seem - we just often take a no-nonsense attitude when trying to get things done. I think now we understand that we have to be more careful about which matters we treat as such.
quote:
And it might also help to consider Golden Ages with the momentous importance that they deserve |
Yes yes - point taken already. Sheesh!
I hope if there are any concerns like this again that no-one feels they can't take it to the Consuls/Ministers thenselves.
