"Sir, an update regarding the Egyptian spy network. Three individuals have been identified as working for the Egyptians."
"Excellent work, I want names, we will root out the foreign spies in our midst."
"Amus and Bemus, Sir."
"General Arnold's advisors?"
"Yes sir. We have our suspicions that Bennedict Arnold is involved as well. Only he was present at the cabinet meeting where Jefferson presented his foreign affairs report. We think the Egyptian government has paid him off and he has been feeding them intelligence. Amus and Bemus are Arnold's contacts with the Egyptian government, and he has kept them in his employ, posing as advisors."
"That traitor!! I want this man brought up on charges of high treason! From now on the name Benedict Arnold will be associated with traitors!"
"In fact Sir, it is worse."
"Worse, how can it be worse? One of my Generals, a patriot who served with me during the Revolution is found to be a traitor."
"Well the Indians have spies in the government as well."
"Damn Indians, I've always suspected they were up to no good. Alert the guards, find these intelligence leaks and plug the holes."
"Yes Sir!"

Lizard took counsel with her loyal English ally...

What a world we have inherited....

Of all the world's powers, the only understanding friend we have are the Chinese. Our fellow democracy who is likewise torn and neutral... they fear the accumulation of power. This war is influenced by and may further tip the balance of power, and even neutral nations must be concerned....
... untangling the web of deceit and manuevering that led up to this war...
Envious of the wealth and power amassed by the Azande and Indians, the smaller nations of Egypt, Serbia and Tartardom began plotting an invasion...
The Serbs provided technology, information and military assistance to their neighbors, however the duplicitus Egyptians had other intentions. They fed their allies' battle plans to the Indians and taught the Azande the new Serbian innovation in military Tactics... and the betrayal dealt decades of military research into the hands of the highly militarized superpower, the Azande.
For this there could be no explanation or apology and battle plans quickly changed from attacking the Indians and Azande to punishing the Egyptians for their betrayal. The Egyptians however made public the plans to attack the Azande and Indians, and called upon their new allies to defend them. This brought the war to its current state with Serbia & Tartardom vs. the Azande, Egyptians and Indians.
...backroom diplomacy on the part of the Azande and Chinese...
These are indeed troubled times... |
Lizard felt something was wrong with her ally. The counsel was full of subtle support and praise for the Serbs but not entirely friendly or supportive of the Azande.
She was troubled.
Her logic was locking into place:
* The Azande had up until the 900's concentrated on trade and develpment
* Curiously, in the few years before learning of the Serb/Egyptian plans to attack she had switched to a policy of military vigilance. She had sensed something.
* The Egyptians were being bullied by the Serbs; they were being poked in the back and pushed forward to attack the Azande simply to curb Azande development
* No thought was given to the carnage that might follow in Egypt
* The Serbs were a manipulative, jeolous and greedy breed who would trample on their 'friends' for her own advancement; yet the Azande had no such aspirations
* In the following two centuries Lizard tuned in to these devious plans and her prescience came in to sharp focus
* All production switched to troop creation and to achieve the finest quality home defence guard she ruled as a single power for 80 years; returning to a democratic forum in the great Hall in the year 1020AD
* This permitted very rapid creation of the finest quality troops
* Within the flash of a lizards tongue the Tartars attacked Egypt and the Serbs are threatening to do the same; simply because Egypt stood up for herself and refused to be bullied!
* This argument over tech trading that the Serbs are whining about is a furfy for the Azande had offerred Egypt many modern technologies in exchange for Tactics (the Tactics tree was irrelevant); and in any event Tactics was also tradable and on offer from the Chinese. If the Azande were unable to trade for Tactics it was not critical because rail and cannon were an option (in the unfortunate circumstance of any war being declared).
* The Serbs and Tartars are simply war mongers looking to create war in their world whilst minimising the effects on themselves.
If the English could not see this more clearly there was trouble for this alliance.

The Serbs are quiet on the issue, and that is why the issue bothers me.
Only with the addition to the main Serbian strike force to the mix, would the Tartar invasion have the staying power to hold off Egyptian and Indian counter attacks, much less direct intervention by the powerful Azande.
As it appears now, it looks to be mere oppertunistic furor within India and South Africa. The Egyptians may have cause for a blood fued with the Tartars, but foreign intervention on a large scale for any purpose other than to force a favorable peace is mere imperialistic hype, taking advantage of one of the world's least capable empires, threatening their colonies, and using the argueably next worst off nation to take the brunt of said attack.
That's said, the Chinese have no love for the Serbian cause, nor their shameless manipulation of the Tartar government for their own purposes. We stand by our ally, with the belief that the Serbs are at the heart of such actions, and the fact that China has continuely assured Serbia of its neutrality, their forces continue to threaten San Francisco, although from a safe distance from the heavy artillery present within the now heavily fortified town. We suggest the Serbs stand strong to their commitments, and send their troops to battle against the foes of the Tartars, not to prolong the senseless warfare, but to allow the war to end on terms that do not destroy the most fragile of nations today.

On the contrary, I only hope the Serbs might is used to properly to defend my poor ally. We have been put in the horrible position of having allies on both sides of this war. We can only hope it ends with the minimum ammount of bloodshed possible. Without intervention from the Serbs, Tartardom is doomed to a long war against 3 superior nations, and that is a burden that is not theirs alone to bear. |
Azande missive to the Chinese:
So my dear friend, you are basically encouraging a major world-wide conflict rather than pressuring your AGGRESSIVE ally to accept the peace plan.
You can't ask another power to defend your ally who, unprovoked, attacked another country and refuses any diplomatic resolution. It is clear your ally, the Tartars who speak of EMPIRE and dismiss peace proposals, is hell-bent on running as war machine through Asia.
Are you blind?
Respectfully,
Lizard

Lizard has received fresh intelligence that suggests an imminent Serbian attack on Egypt, regardless of World diplomacy...
an almost inaudible conversation was being taped,
"If the Serbs do not punish the Egyptians, they are going to profit from all this and that's a very bad message for everyone that it's OK to doublecross the Serbs....their move was definitely stupid... now we are their enemy for the rest of eternity...
Azande gave industrialisation to CHINESE!!!
To give Ind to my mortal enemy is to plunge a dagger in our heart...
At least we know who to trust now..."
Indeed
