Interestingly enough, I live in Franklin Tennessee. I was raised here, moved away, and came back last year. I am proud to be a Southerner and proud to be a Tennessean. People here are not stupider than other places; in fact, I would say they are more thoughtful than elsewhere. No we are not in a hurry...we were all tought that "Haste makes Waste". Why should the South have to live up to a northern idea of progress? Most of us want to spend time with our families, have a good home, contribute to our community, and give our kids a good sense of values and a head start in life.

Franklin is a wonderful city. The people are friendly and the place is rich in culture and history. Why don't ya'll come on down and sit a spell? We'll show ya a good time...just don't stay too long

I spent two weeks in Altamont during the summer of 1978. I was with a church group called Mountian T.O.P. (Tennessee outreach program). We spent the time doing general fix up on houses of the elderly. It was a very rewarding experience. Of course, Tracy City, looked like a sprawling metropolis by the end of the two weeks!

Absolutely gorgeous county there. And the people are fantastic also!

I just fix their stuff when it breaks, kind of a jack or all trades. But they sure have some dedicated people there. I only work part time for them.

Back in the day, they had a camp there with cabins to house the campers. Is it still there? What kind of facilities do they have now?

They didn't kick me out. They just had one of those parental authority moments where they gave me the standard "if you're gonna live in our house, you're gonna live by our rules" speech, and I thought that was a splendid little piece of wisdom, and a simple solution to the issue to boot.

My parents grew up in Gluoscester City in Camden county, New Jersey. Most of my extended family are there.

If you took South Jersey and stuck it in Virginia, you couldn't tell the difference.

The Virginians might wonder about the sudden influx of hicks...

born and raised in atlanta. so in a way i'm southern, 'cept i can't fake a southern accent at all.

there are lots of things in the south superior to northern things. like waffle house. wayyyy better than the dive you call "ihop".

I was born in Knoxville. My Dad got a degree in engineering thanks to the G.I. bill and stayed on for a few years while working for the T.V.A. His family was from Paris, TN, my mother's family was from Memphis, TN. We left Tennessee when I was two because Dad wanted to pursue a career in electronics design. There just wasn't anything like that in the South in the early 1950s, so he took a job with G.E. in Syracuse, NY.

Southern Identity? Are you crazy!!! There's no such thing for chrissakes... wait 500 years, then you're talking about an identity worth losing, this so called Southern Identity is little more then a fashion trend, a couple hundred years isn't enough to call a real identity or culture. You may as well get upset about 'Ebonyx' fading out as a language.

They have that camp still but it has been improved over the years. Also they built another camp in Spencer a couple of years ago. They are having financial problems now though. They are cutting back on the program and laying off staff.
