In Serbian, Boshko is spelled Bosko and is derived from the word Bog (which means God). Bosko is most commonly used as a nickname of someone named Bogdan (which means God given) and rarely appears as a proper first name (like Richard and ****).

In the case of Serbian nobleman from the 14th century called Boshko Yugovic (Bosko Jugovic, Serbian style spelling) it is most likely the intention to distinguish him from his father also called Bogdan that led to the adoption of the name Boshko that appears regularly in poems from that period.

Bosko is derived like this: Bog + ko (suffix for diminutive) = Bogko but then undergoes a Serbian transformation of consonants to equalize the way they sound for easier pronunciation which produces the final outcome Bosko. As all of you surely know, in Serbian Cyrillic script one sign equals to one sound in pronunciation (one sign is always pronounced in the same way) and in Serbian Latin script sometimes two signs represent one sound, but that’s always the same combination of signs. Much like deutsch (German), or Spanish spelling.

My conclusion is that it is highly unlikely your name comes from Serbian, because we don’t have any Serbs with last name Bosko. You are probably barrel-maker.

No he isn't. We all know about Bogdan, but Boshko is a proper family name in Ukraine/Belorussia.

I was joking, of course, about the barrels.
In Serbian, barrel is called bacva, so although the same root as botchka, not really the same word.

Does bojko come from Bog?

Bojko comes from Boycott and Bog comes from Borg. And Azazel from Dalgetti. Next question?

Simple. I remember your name change thread, where you complained, that your old name sounds like "Spaghetti".

Can't believe this has gotten so many replies, thanks all

The name for a barrel maker in this country is/was "Cooper". Just FYI, I have no other help to give. This is also a bump. Have a nice day.

Ooops, yeah that's right its not Carter.

it may be derived from Bog (God) indeed, like in "Boshe moj" (Oh my God).

Ah, so maybe my grandmother was right about that.

I know that Boshka is street russian for a person's head.

Didn't know that but, well that would explain my burgeoning intellect

quote:
Yup! Dad confirmed it. It's from Bojko, alright.

So my name was probably something like Bojko before the Ellis Island people butchered it? What does Bojko mean? God something or other?

quote:
It's a Belorussian Ukrainian family name, alright.

Well its obviously that (since its my family name and my family is Belorus) but I think its a Serbian first name too.

Aaaah interesting. Since then my brother's name (Michael Boshko) means an amazingly repetitive "God given gift of god."

Yeah, Yug Bogdan I game across both of them in the Kosovo Cycle a while ago (which is how I learned that Boshko/Bosko is a Serbian first name).
