What about building 3 Archers? 2 on the hills W and 1 SW looking for barbs.
Instead of sending a Settler/Spearman team, we can send the Settler alone, have it protected by an Archer and send the Spearman afterwards. Our new cities would be founded earlier, by the No. of turns necessary to build the Spearman.
Or do you plan to send Settlers without Spearmen and wait 10 turns to build a Warrior in the new cities?

Right now, just to keep up with Izzardia's settler pump (even with the workers thrown in), all I think can afford to do is build warriors in CoS and Swindon - for now. After that, I would certainly be open to building a couple of archers to whack barbs.

Right now our military is utterly pathetic. It consists of 1 regular, and 2 conscript warriors. We desperately need more units - anything, really - to get some lookouts posted (for barbs, and for Monkeys too). Warriors are 10 shields, Archers 20. Speed is of the essense. And warriors should be able to handle the barbs for now.
