	How do I transfer files between computers? Suffering from ads?

I have a whole lot of files that I need to replace from a computer's HD to another, but they're so big that I can't send them via mail, nor I can zip and place them into a floppy- I don't have a CD writer as well (how miserable lol)



What am I supposed to do?

I take it they are two separate pcs, and not just a new harddrive?

If they are both connected to the net, and you have broadband, I would try sending them via msmessenger or ICQ. Pretty painless, unless on dialup. I haven't tried it in a while, but I don't think there is any kind of limit on transfers via windows messenger.

Is it the whole hard drive, or just files? Norton has a program, ghost, but that might just be for whole drives.

Actually, what I would probably do, if both pcs are in the same house, might be to just slave one to the other and move the files like that, if your connection is slow.

Undoubtedly there are other better, more efficient methods, but these are things I've done before, hope it helps.

Install both had drives in one of the computers, make a direct tranfer between the drives, and reinstall the one you moved in its proper box.

I had a HD backup on a cd, that did not read properly. I have the actual HD.

Finish installing your new computer, then plug the old HDD in as slave.

Yep-same house. I guess I could connect them with some kind of dunno-what the hell?

Of course I could always open the whole stuff and replace the HDs but I'm not in the mood for mutilating two systems

Seriously, it wouldnt' take that much work to move a harddrive to the other computer.

OTOH, I installed a new harddrive on my machine 2 weeks ago and it killed the power supply, so beware. Cheap ass dell psu's. And Dell of course uses odd ball psus, so more expensive and wait a week.

If he has a newer machine he shouldn't need a crossover cable. Or you could try Firewire or USB 2 if both computers have it.

I remember a program called Laplink that connected computers through parallel cable (the printer cord). Dunno if its still around, was fairly old.

if you can put both on xp, you can transfer them with a direct parallel connection.

you can also move one hd into the other computer.

you can also buy a $30 switch, connect the two computers with ethernet cat5 patch cables, and share files.

you can also use a direct firewire or usb connection.

those are some of the ones that pop into mind that avoid floppy hell.

One application that could be of use is Hyperterminal. I know this exists on 98 and Me and possibly XP as well.

Link the two computers together with a null modem cable and you can transfer along it.

However the transfer rate is not high and you may have to get used to waiting a long time.

Just take the power and data cable from your cd-rom and plug it in your hd. Reboot. Transfer.

You should already have HyperTerminal installed on your Win98 PC. If not, you should be able to install it from your Win98 CD.
