I don't think married couples should get benefits from the government.

I don't know about ritualized marriage, but monogamy actually goes two species back on the hominid evolutionary line. It seems that some genius Homo ergaster came up with the idea of mongoamy as a means of making his kin-group the baddest kin-group on the Serengeti. Previously most Homo ergaster kin-groups were alpha male dominate harems. Since the big guy there was constant competition for the favors of the goils such groups generally had fewer males than females. By giving each lady a man and each man a lady, the monogamous group had more muscle when it came to facing off against other groups for the right to have access to that yummy dead antelope carcas or those delicious bananas.

Hence the reason for promotion of marriage . If men just went around spreading their seed, it would cause great social unrest.

Got spare money?

Did you know that the "crown" of the human glans penis is actually designed to scrape the previous guys sperm out of the female's vagina? Kinda tells you something about humans doesn't it?

not if society is built upon such a principle... there are many small tribes that did not have a concept of monogamy... monogamy didn't develop as mutual bond... woman were seen as property, hence the Bible referring to adultery as a crime against poverty.

But then again, human civilization has developed some very unnatural rituals. I maintain that most Western civilization is still recovering from the Victorian era.

You talk about monogamy meaning women as property. That is much better than a situation where the man has sex with the woman and then leaves when it is time to pay for the child and goes on and on to have more sex.

Better to have a monogamous marriage so that children have two stable parents. And monogamy gives women greater power than other marriage systems.

Yes, if you want everyone to go back to primitive tribes maybe it'll work . But there is no way there is going to be a societal raising of children in a large, modern country anytime soon.

What's the difference between me and my girlfriend who have ben living together for 3 years and her friend who got married, then divorced after 8 months?

They got 8 months worth of benefits.

Marriage should have no state blessing. It should be purely a religious ritual.

Current theory is that Homo ergaster and Homo erectus were two different species, and it is ergaster from which we evolved, not erectus. Homo ergaster seems to have been much more industrious and creative.

one reason I got out of the military was I got paid less than married people.

It sucks working harder and getting paid less.

married people took time off all the time whenver their wives had a problem. Single people could not take time off.

I'm not bitter
