Reading some of the threads, one thing I realllly agree with, we could do with a scenario editor or at least, on the easy rung, the option to start with three or more planets rather than just the one. In MOO2, fr'instance, we could start with an advanced civilisation with several planets, if we werent feeling too self confident.
I have just started the game and am busy with making mistakes, letting the Altairians, who didnt waste anytime in making an appearance, colonise the best planet in a system while I colonised by mistake the worst! I really could do with a three planet lead as a comfort zone, guys!

You should download the expansion pack, set the "enable cheat keys ON" option in the menu screen.
Then, do Ctrl-L. You will skip the colonisation phase. Every race will have roughly the same number of planets, and you'll get a few starbases too.

LDiCesare, thanks.
I thought I had downloaded the expansion pack. I will look again to see if there is that option.
I just started a new game, btw, in which after just a few moves I ran out of resources and stayed out of resources. Can some one tell me whether that was a bug or what?

When you start the game, you start with 1000BC. Almost everyone puts teh spendings slider to 100%, which means you run a deficit. That becomes even worse if you rush-buy stuff. When you hit 0 BC, you can no longer rush-buy or trade BC for something in the diplomacy screen. When you reach -500BC, your planets stop production altogether, and all money is put back into your treasury. This will result in your going to, say, -503BC, then -477BC producing nothing this turn, then -560BC as you have produced a bit, then 2 turns again producing nothing... Not very good. So what you do is: Lower spendings until you get +0 or more per turn. It's better to do this just before you hit -500BC.
You can also try to increase your revenue by increasing tax rate, using freighters, or, even, reducing tax rates (yes, if tax rate is too high, people cheat and don't pay taxes).

Merci bien, LdiCesare! I was beginning to think there was a glitch in the way the game had loaded!
