Yes he should have been, and so should George Bush I. But it was too soon after Watergate and the Dem's had no spine to take on a popular President. Besides, he had plausible deniablity, as everyone took the blame on themselves to cover for the Pres and Veep.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

wasn't it peachy that just as the US begun to declare a war on drugs, the US was ilegally funding a geroup with huge ties to drug dealers and helped create a trafficing system in Central America?

I actually voted about the same. Pinochet was much bloodier, but he knew when to leave. So its short and brutal, or long and weakening. It's one's choice, really.

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Compared to 40? Yes.

17 years for a dictatorship is pretty average.

Add to this the fact that pinochet followed some of Machiavelli's advice: if you are going to have a purge, do it soon. Pinochets reing of terror time was soon after taking pwer and through the mid-late 70's. BY the 1980's there was no longer a need, and the bloodlettting dimished significantly.

And all of this comes from a guy who knows as a family friend someone who was a member of Chile's communist party politburo when Allende as president.

While the killings may have reduced significantly, there was still no shortage of political imprisonment and state brutality. The initial repression was conducted so clinically that it was "only" necessary to use just savage police beatings later on.
