Is the United States an exceptional country in the number of people who are grossly overweight?

How does our country's health compare to other Western countries??

I'm pleasantly surprised at the type of girth Mr. Fun was referring to in this thread.

I think that America has a considerable lead in the number of people who are grossly overweight, as opposed to moderately overweight people.

The damn article required a password for AOL members to access the feature, "AOL News."

And no, you are not going to turn this thread into an anti-AOL spamfest.

THIS thread is about the unhealthy population of the United States, and how do we compare to other parts of the Western world.

That may be true in the short term, but there were reports floating around that the obesity rate would rise significantly the next 20 years.

Additionally, the average weight of the largest folks is forecasted to increase as well.

I don't know if other American expatriates have had this experience, but when I returned to the US this summer after an 18 month absence, I was stunned at the number of obese people I saw everywhere. I mean, I'm not small -- 5'11", ~240 lbs., body mass index of ~33 -- but we're talking huge people here: 300+ lb. men and 200+ lb. women seemed to be everywhere you looked. It really was shocking.

A common misconception caused by the association of a fat Chinese god of luck with the Buddha in the eyes of many Westerners.

I think as a nation we're kind of fat too, but we don't have those super fat people that much, actually I think I've never seen one with my own eyes. But we have lots of moderately fat folks, I guess you could call them a bit chubby. Middle aged man with their beer bellies are everywhere . But we need that fat to keep us covered in the winter.

And all it took was a five year research programme, seven months of intensive public awareness campaigns, and a crafty redfinition of "proper".

The reason the US has an obesity problem, I think, is that parents are so busy they feed thier kids junk food, and the habit continues into adulthood. People are also too busy to get any exercise (unless you work at a job with manual labor, but I'm talking about office jobs). There are also too many ads for fast food (It's all your fault, Ming ).

Don't say that ads don't affect people. It's simply not true. I hate Pennsylvania because mail.com has a couple flash app ad imitators that cause Firebird to appear to hang.

Yeah, but portions have gone up significantly thanks to cheap beef, etc. I remember reading an article where they compared a Big Mac from when Mcdonalds first opened to now, and todays burger was twice as big. Fountain drinks are now three times the size compared to when Mc'D's first opened.

Youve got to be kidding me? Maybe its different in the UK but the big mac is not all that big now. It must have been the thinist bit of meat when they opened.

Yeah, it's true. And that's just for the basic value meal.

You can "super-size" for like 40 cents, and then super-duper size for something like a buck and change. There's one day's allowance for calories, and two days allowance for saturated fat, in that one meal alone.

Hell you can be an expat and all it takes is showing up at an expat bar for your brain to have problems adjusting to the concept of relatively young women being fat.
