electric fields, the human body, and the internet Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

ok, so there these guys, right, from asia, and so they've successfully demonstrated a broadband wireless connection that uses electric fields to transmit information at 10mbps.

these electric fields they use? human electric fields.

that's so cool.

It doesn't sound like it's actually the electric field of the human body, but rather an induced electric field which is transported along a human body...

In other words, you're a human waveguide...

Tired of ads?

Generally electric fields used in communication are of very low intensity, except when they actually have to transmit over large distances. The energy output is almost certainly hundreds of times lower than that of a cell phone.

And definitely much lower than a ham radio or something...

If you're really taht afraid you probably shouldn't stand next to a microwave either. Those things pump out huge amounts of electromagnetic flux...

Though, honestly, I don't know why is it dangerous. I guess the hype got me. I am doing things because everyone else does.

It's pretty silly. If large EM fields **** you up then I'm already dead meat. Half the labs here are bathed in magnetic fields of a hundred Gauss or so (.01 T)...

I accidentally dropped mine behind a lead shield into a flask of tritiated cholesterol. I bet the lab techs almost shat themselves when they tested it. Or else they thought I was washing my hands in it.

Don't be silly. The radiation fields most certainly aren't ionizing (their frequency is way too low for that).

I prefer that.
I'm actually convinced the cell-phone scandal will be the future equivalent of the cigarette scandal. I'm damn glad I avoid both;

That sounds possible. They needed radar strong enough to burn through interference. It could easily be putting out 10 (?) kilowatt-range radiation. Depending on the frequency you might absorb a large percentage of that, which would be enough to burn you up pretty bad.

Maybe it'll be like the way the marketing department changed the name of NMR(nuclear magnetic resonance) to MRI(magnetic resonance imagery) so people wouldn't be scared to undergo the process.

Most people in America say 'nuke-you-ler' anyway, so it probably didn't make a difference in the long run.

Screw this, I'll take my chances on cigarettes. I mean, if cigarettes came in a black pack, with a skull and a crossbones on the cover, called Tumors, smokers would still be lining up around the corner to buy some.
"I bet you get a tumor as soon as you light one up!"
(apologies to Denis Leary)

"I'm gonna name my tumor Marla."
(apologies to Chuck Palahnuik)
