Changing Rules Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

If you want to make custom rules in the editting feature how do you save it so it affects all your games, not just the scenario.

You have to edit the Civ3mod.bic (Civ3x.bix if you're playing with Play the World).

Make sure to save the original file somewhere safe, in case unexpected problems appear.

Changes done on the Civ3mod.bic / Civ3x.bix do not affect existing games, only new ones. They also don't affect scenarios with custom rules.

BACK UP BEFORE DOING THIS.

You would save the "scenario" with the altered rules in the main PTW folder. I believe it is called Civ3X. You can't save over it you have to rename your "scenario" to Civ3X.

EDIT: Spiffor beat me to it.

I wouldn't recommend changing those files. I'd recommend just playing your modified rules as a scenario. It's safer and all you work isn't lost when you update the game when patches come out.

There's really no benefit in overwriting the original file. If you save as a scenario, then select Load Scenario in the start menu, it will always go back to the one you're playing. All your really doing is saving yourself one mouse click. You might just find that the aggravation you get from unexpected bugs appearing to be not worth the trouble.

Full PM-box? Change here!

If you mod the civ3mod.bic itself, would the game's results show up on the hall of fame? (as opposed to regularly modded games)

The reason I have modified it before was to start PBEM custom rules games with a random map that none of us knew beforehand.

It depends on if you are playing Civ3 or PTW. IIRC, (it's been a while) mods in Civ3 did appear.

No, the game can detect any sort of change in the rules, regardless whether it's a scenario or a modified civ3mod.bic file.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

If your problem is the Hall of Fame, you can edit (in notepad) HighScores.cv3 yourself after each game that you play. In PTW, it is in the PTW directory.

HighScore.cv3 format
civleader A nnnnn B C D

The first field contains the name of your civ's leader, with spaces replaced by underscores, e.g., Abu_Bakr or Joan_d'Arc.

A = the civ race counting from the list shown in the hall of fame. That is 22 would be Arabs.

nnnnn is your final score.

B = difficulty level counting Chieftain as 0, Diety as 5.

C = type of vic/loss
VictoryType: Domination(0), Conquest(1), Cultural(2), Diplomatic(3), Spacerace(4), Retired(5), Histograph(6)

D = 1 means won, 0 means lost

What's the point though (editing the high scores file), the only one who ever sees is you.

I am often reinstalling, so I don't care, but:

It may be nice to have the HoF handle it. The reason is that 6 months later, I may wonder if I ever played as Aztec or some other civ an dwon't be sure. I could look at the HoF and see that in fact I once did play them an dhow many times. That sort of thing may be of some use, especiall now that CivIII is over 2 years old. I for one am not sure of all the games I ever played.
