	Snoring. Inflate your Upload Space

So am I the only one who's gotten complaints over the years from girlfriends, roommates, friends, and family members about snoring? I find it really annoying and embarrassing because it's not like there's anything I can do to stop it. Well, I have tried those sprays which you use before going to sleep but they're expensive and you have to use them EVERY SINGLE TIME you go to sleep.

I'm considering getting that new laser treatment which is supposed to stop snoring for the rest of your life but I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about it. Have any of you had this procedure before and were there any side effects? My insurance wouldn’t cover it since it's an elective procedure but the cost is only about $1000 so I can cover it. If I'm going to spend the money though I want to make sure it's safe and effective. Any advice anyone?

Let me know how the laser thing is, if that's how you go.
Those strips are pretty good, but I pull them off in my sleep.
Now I just smoke and drink to the wee hours, go to sleep on my right side, don't move, and don't snore.
I don't think.

According to a website I've consulted, it is frequent to go to the hospital a few days after the operation, even if it was well done. Also if the operation is botched, there are risks that your voice transforms a little, and that some of the liquid you drink will exit through the nose (this last side-effect is supposed to last a few days at most)

It depends on why you're snoring. Get a sleep apnea test first, before you have surgery done. My dad has sleep apnea and so does Theben. Bunnygrrl thinks I do to, since I stop breathing in my sleep and also snore very loudly.

What's really bothering me is something that started happening about two years ago. I've started mini-regurgitating in my sleep, and then inhaling it. Four times now I've woken up coking on vomit (and never when I've been drinking). At least once, I had taken a Pepcid complete before going to bed. Stomach acid on your larynx is really unpleasant.

I practically lived with my ex girlfriend for a year and she never told me I stopped breathing in my sleep nor did any of my old college roommates. As I understand it sleep apnea is when part of the throat or snynus pathway closes up during sleep thus preventing breathing. I believe sleep apnea, like snoring, can become worse when people gain weight.

I have gained weight over the last 2-3 years but I'm not that over weight and sleep apnea doesn't run in my family. Aparently snoring does though since both my father and grandfather snore/d like bears.

Just an update I'm getting this done today. The total cost is just under $1200 and the recovery time usually takes about 5-7 days with common side effects mainly being a sore throat feeling and possibily disscomfort while swollowing for the first day or two. They use a laser to reduce the size of the uvula and the surrounding tissue thus reducing or preventing snoring. Supposedly 80% of the people who undergo this proceedure stop snoring entirely, 15% have reduced snoring, and 5% it doesn't effect at all.

Hopefully I won't be one of the 5%.

Good luck Oerdin! Seems like a pretty hefty price just to stop snoring, but if it bothers you (or a SO) that much I guess it's worth it. My wife just smacks me and I turn on my side. That's cheaper.

Do you still have your tonsils? I used to snore pretty loudly, but after I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea they took out my tonsils and now I don't snore anymore. Don't have apnea anymore either, which is probably more important, now that I think about it.

Yep, I still have my tonsils but the doctor told me my tossils are very small. Unfortunately, my uvula is unusually large thus my snoring problem and my SO's inability to sleep through the night.

Mine was pretty much the opposite. I had abnormally large tonsils which were blocking off my airway at night. I'm glad I got rid of them.

You should definitely go to the doctor. My father-in-law used to snore a lot, and when he went to the doctor he found out he has bad sleep apnea. It can be pretty serious because your brain's oxygen supply can go down to almost nothing.

Mmmm...this could explain why you're still a commie.

My years of snoring came close to ruining my marriage. Went to the doctor and he recommended that before I try surgery or waste any more money on sprays and nose strips, that I simply lose some weight. 20 lbs later - no more snoring!

So I would second the go-the-doctor opinion.

I have a snoring problem to, my ex made me sleep in the spare room most of the time (not good for a relationship). I may go and see if I can find out what causes it.

I'm glad that worked for you. I have put an a good deal of weight in the last three years but even when I was 175 (remember I'm 6'1" so 175 is light) I still snored though less often and less loudly.

My father snores like hell, to the point I cannot sleep more than 4 hours when I share a room with him.

It almost ruined his couple with my mother, had she not decided to use wax balls systematically to clog her ears.

Ok everyone. I just got finished with the procedure about an hour ago. When I went into the doctor's office his nurse (who was a totally hot blond ) gave me an adavan to relax me then after about 20 minutes I was lead into the surgical room. In the surgical room the doctor explained the procedure step by step, for the third time, then he gave me a decongestant for my nose (my nose was clear but supposedly some people stuff up during the procedure and you have to breath through your nose until the doctor is done) as well as a localized anistetic. We waited five minutes for the anistetic to kick in and then he placed a small rubber chalk block in my mouth so that my mouth would stay open for the entire opporation.

Next he took a small needle shaped electrode and stuck it into the soft pallet tissue at the back of my throat; running a slight electric current through the tissue is supposed to help stiffen the muscles so that they aren’t so flexible. This will make it so they won’t flap around while I sleep and generate that snoring sound. Once that was done the doctor took the laser and cut off approximately 2/3 of my uvula (the little piece of flesh that hangs down the back of your throat) and then lasered the ends of the surrounding tissue in order to stiffen them. Lastly two little notches were made, one on each side of the uvula, so that the remaining bit of uvula would continue to function properly but it would no longer be so big enough to generate the snoring sound. The entire procedure took about 25 minutes.

The only uncomfortable part is that my throat now feels slightly sun burned from the laser and there is a modest amount of swelling where the procedure was performed. I also didn’t like the smell of burning flesh that occurred when the laser cut of part of the uvula but that lasted no more then 5-10 seconds. Looking at the back of my throat with a mirror there is a slight discoloration to the skin caused by the laser but that is supposed to heal with in one week. Lastly, the doctor gave me a bottle of antibiotics, another of vikadine, and told me to periodically gargle with salt water or water containing desolved aspirin.

Paradoxically, the doctor told me I might actually snore more for a day or two due to the swelling which the surgury may cause. Once the swelling goes down though it should be smooth sailing.

Well, I snored so loud to night I got kicked out of the room. The swelling hasn't gone down at all so I guess things are progressing exactly as the doctor predicted. The swelling and discomfort do make it uncomfortable to swallow but it is nothing unbearable. I haven’t taken any pain medicating in nine hours so maybe I should go pop one of my happy pills.

I only snore when I've got a blocked nose.
Unfortunately I have a constant cold in the winter and hay fever in the summer so my nose is mostly blocked.
This doesn't guarantee that I'll snore, but it improves the chances by a good degree.

My girlfriend says that I always snore when I'm drunk though. But I'm not going to go that far to stop snoring.

I am starting to think these surgery was all a big expensive mistake. Most of the swelling has gone down but post-surgery I am snoring much, much worse then I ever had before in my entire life. I mean I snore so loud I wake myself up and my girlfriend now refuses to even let me sleep over at her house.

Before I just had occational mild snoring especially if I drank that night or if I had excersized a lot that day. Now I'm out $1200 and the doctor's surgery has made it so that a snore ALL THE TIME! Now that I look back it seems to me I did things all wrong. I didn't know anything about this doctor other then he had an ad in the paper; I mean I didn't ask for any referals (I just assumed he wouldn't give me a bad referal so why bother?) and I don't know his background or if he's been sued for malpractice before. Next time I'm going to be much more careful about choicing a doctor and I'm not just going to assume that because he has a MD that he's qualified.
